Microsoft CEO Talks About Owning Both Xbox and PC Gaming

4
Today Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella provided more color on the company’s gaming business and outlook during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in San Francisco.

Nadella explained that the company is building a gaming service in which the console is going to be important, as it continues to be the place where the heaviest gamers are, while PC as a gaming device is increasing in popularity. On top of that, there is Microsoft’s ability to build Xbox Live as a network with subscription services. That is a “huge opportunity” for the company.

Asked to elaborate further, Nadella mentioned that Microsoft is “very happy” about the core gaming asset that the company has. That asset was built on with the beloved Xbox brand, as well as PC gaming.

“One of the things that most people have not recognized is that we’re the owners of both of those”

This has really helped growing engagement on Xbox Live, and the Xbox Game Pass subscription service is the beginning of what Nadella feels is going to be a transition where the console and PC are going to be “super-important,” but ultimately it’s about “people and their ability to game anywhere.”

“That’s where we’re going, whether it is with our subscription offerings with Game Pass, whether it’s with Mixer, which is growing very rapidly, in terms of streaming, or eSports franchises around our first-party games. So I think we have many, many leverages there. But fundamentally, it comes from that heritage of having been in the gaming business for multiple decades at this point and built up that capability in a world where we now have the ability to take that and have it service a much broader marketplace than ever before.”

Specialize Microsoft won't own the PC market, steam won't let that happen.

Totally agree. Steam for sure has the overall hand for PC and probably no one will compete with them. I Don't see a chance with Microsoft.

Also, the Microsoft store is utterly useless to use and own games on. They lock the files so no one can access them, can't even see what's installed half the time. It's utterly useless.

Doubt microsoft is going toown PC anytime soon. They're stuck on the Xbox and probably will be for the next century to come, if not ever.

PC Sorry, Microsoft. You have like 2 exclusives and all the other games that aren't exclusive are available for PC. Steam has my heart for PC Gaming. Steam actually listens to the community. Steam wanted to charge for Mods, Community didn't like it, They canceled it and we haven't had it since. Also, I'm sorry Microsoft, I bought the Xbox One X and I wish I would never have because I just traded it for the PS4 Pro. Why would you do such a thing? I'm not really liking where I see Microsoft going. TBH, The only reason I played on my Xbox was that some of the games I liked were only on Xbox and Not PC. Now that I am able to play most exclusive Xbox games on my PC, why even own an Xbox? Better Graphics, Better FPS, Mods the list goes on and on. Sorry, Microsoft.

Because not everyone wants to spend over £1000 on a pc

You don't need to spend over £1000 to build a PC that's actually decent. So that's kinda a false claim.

I don't know about "steam listens to the community" Steam likes to do what they do for the $. The reason consoles are liked the way they are is because you can have one system and not have to worry about upgrading anything for a long time, just like PC. You get the best Mobo, CPU, GPU. You don't have to worry about upgrading for a LONG time unless one of them goes caput. Same with the console but still, that's what warranty is for. (goes for both as well). People have grown up playing with a controller in their hands, not a keyboard and mouse. A lot of games on the PC are played best with controllers, yet there are some that are Keyboard and Mouse 'exclusive'.

You can't really say you can get the best hardware on PC and then don't have to worry about upgrading for a while, when comparing why consoles are liked the way they are - to as you say "steam games" and the overall PC scene. Source Engine games which are made by Valve can run on even mediocre PCs back from the mid/late 2000's -- CSGO would be the only exception really but stuff like Gmod and TF2 can run if they are not loaded to their ass with mods or texture packs. Valve listens to their community a lot more than people seem to know. Other examples other than what PC mentioned is, there have been indie devs who would put trading cards in their games, the keys that they are given for the game to advertise in giveaways they would sell for actual game price or use them on botted accounts, so they can collect the cards then sell the cards for profit. Valve banned the devs from having their games on Steam both now and in the future. Another more recent incident from a dev/publisher on Steam had to do with review fraud. Botted accounts were in use to give good reviews, people being paid for a good review (not an honest review, literally kissing their ass) and apparently even going out of their way to try and get negative reviews taken down. Sure, you can say Valve is after money - they are a business after all, but most of their money cash grabs are literally cosmetic items for their Source Games that no one is forced to have. Having a Karambit and a $2,000 AWP skin on CSGO isn't going to make you better at all, if people feel they are forced to buy those items then that's their own fault and can't blame Valve for cashing in on it. They even went out of their way to shut down CSGO betting sites, which effectively bring them money in the end because those videos were stupid popular on YouTube and chances are a lot of people went and bought skins from the Steam Marketplace and put them on the websites, which would eventually make their way back on the Steam Marketplace from someone who won a jackpot and wants some quick cash on Steam. Valve has done a lot to show they listen to the community and I'm one of the first people to call Valve out on bullshit that needs to be addressed, which there is plenty, but they've done a lot so far.

I would also disagree very strongly with "a lot of games on PC are best played with controllers." Platformer games, some RPG games and some racing games I would agree with strongly; with fighting games being the strongest contender. You're not going to be seeing me play Sonic Mania on a keyboard/mouse, but you're not going to be seeing me play Fallout 4 with a controller. Obviously FPS games are suited for a mouse and keyboard, there is no arguing the precise movement of a mouse to a controller, MOBA/MMORPG games you are really hindering yourself with not using mouse and keyboard with how much there actually is going on, racing games work best if you have a racing setup -- so that will be a grey area for those. Primarily RPG games have had a better fair with a mouse and keyboard simply because a lot of the movements can be finicky with a joystick, when compared to a keystroke. Other RPG games base themselves on tile strategy games - almost like CIV - where a mouse will be much quicker to move around your actions/inventory while also being able to click a tile much more accurately unless you just have poor hand-eye coordination. Action games are a 50/50 split. Nier:Automata I played with a controller because it's a open world hack and slash type game, which fairs much better for button mashing, but move onto something like Dead by Daylight or Friday the 13th, I wouldn't be caught dead using a controller for those games. Obviously this is different per person. Of course, fighting games are better suited for a controller or a fight stick, since mashing and basically beating the shit out of your keyboards keys probably isn't the best idea for the long run lol

Bro chill out it is his opinion if you don't like it just say you don't agree lol don't write a full f***** paragraph
