Microsoft is NOT Buying Valve, Gabe Newell Confirms to Fan

Recently, a rumor broke out that Microsoft is looking to expand its portfolio of studios and franchises by acquiring some major game companies. EA was the name that was floated as being the likeliest possibility, but Valve was one of the other names that came up in the rumors.

At least that part of those rumors was false, however- none other than Gabe Newell, head of Valve, has confirmed so. Responding to a fan via email (which is something that he is known to do quite a bit), Newell said that he is “not aware” of Valve being bought out by Microsoft. So, that ends that.

Valve fans can therefore rest easy- the company is in no danger of going corporate any time soon. Of course, this also means that said fans’ wait for Valve to actually put out a meaningful game continues. Half Life 3 will never happen.

No one has said it was for sale. Gabe is a smart guy, smart enough to know that M$ would drive it into the ground like a hated tent peg.


Best description ever. I slightly disagree though, MS are still very successful in what they do. I think they'd change it, not necessarily for the good.

They arent buying it. I wish they didnt buy EA I feel like they will mess up there games in some way.

I'm not surprised, despite Microsoft being a huge and prosperous company, buying valve would not be helpful. I'm glad they haven't.

I remember seeing an article about how a "news" company was looking at games that can cause seizures based off the flashing of colors.

They ended up showing a clip from the game and triggered 300 seizures. This was somewhere in Japan.
