Take Two: Red Dead Redemption 2 Will Probably Have Microtransactions

4.1
Rockstar Games have been known for their quality, compelling single player campaigns that create infinitely detailed worlds for players to lose themselves in for dozens of hours. Nonetheless, Rockstar’s biggest success to date has been GTA Online, the free to play, microtransaction funded online component of GTA5, that has become the enduring reason for the game’s continued success.

And even as the rhetoric around microtransactions continues to get toxic, it sounds like the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 will probably have them. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a recent financial call that the company earned 42% of its revenues thanks to microtransactions last quarter- so this is something they are looking at going forward.

“We aim to have recurrent consumer spending opportunities for every title that we put out at this company. It may not always be an online model, it probably won’t always be a virtual currency model, but there will be some ability to engage in an ongoing basis with our titles after release across the board.”

The good news is that, the way it is worded, it could just as meaningfully apply to single player expansions and DLC well after the game’s release, much like what GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption got- but considering the relative, sustained success of GTA Online compared to those, I am not sure I want to be that optimistic about this, either. Red Dead Redemption 2 will launch on PS4 and Xbox One next year.

RepBandit Why not come out with a game that dlc and etc are free. More people would play.

The majority of players do not want Micro transactions. But they make enough money off the small amount of players to justify it.
I mean, I think it is safe to say for every million players they make $50 extra on %5 of those users. I also think it is safe to say there are 1% of users who have the money to spend plenty more than $50. They make enough money that they focus on that. Their GTA V speech about no single-player DLC was a lie. They were going to milk GTA V Online once they realized they could. And that is what they did. No one lets go of the cash cow when they have it in their arms.

Decy What game that's coming out these days don't have microtransactions lol?

Yes, what games don't have microtransactions these days. I love microtransactions. They add items to the game. I really love games like PUBG where you can get a rare item within the microtransaction and sell it to others for good money. If you don't like microtransactions and don't play any games that have them, then you won't be playing any games in 2017 lol I love them tbh. What I don't c like is Pay to Win, which is very rare in games tbh and its way too over looked as many games don't have Pay to Win features. Most games you pay for stuff that doesn't impact the game at all but makes your weapon etc look cooler like skins etc. Also, microtransactions make a game live a lot longer as the company and created the game can keep an income while still creating content for the game. Keep The Microtransactions COMING!

I can understand microtransactions and the financial gains Take Two, Rockstar will make but have they been living under a rock for the last 5 years? Look at EA games, they're full of microtransactions and nobody likes them. We don't pay £50/$70 for a game which essentially requires you to fork out even more money to get anywhere in the game.

I don't like the idea of probably paying £1.99 for a new horse when RDR2 drops too.

I hope, unlike GTA5 they bring out additional single player content though. Similar to Undead Nightmare from RDR. Just something to keep people who aren't that interested in the online aspect, playing the game.

I can see it now. Complete single player within 2 weeks, go online and find everyone riding around on ultra fast and strong, mythical horses which they've bought via microtransactions.. I won't be bothering with online at this rate.
