Consoles killed Fallout: New Vegas’ most ambitious ideas, dev says

While Bethesda is now in charge of the Fallout games, many fans point to work from Obsidian Entertainment—the developer behind older games like Fallout: New Vegas—as some of the best in the series. According to some recent comments from an Obsidian developer, though, Fallout: New Vegas could have been even better—if only consoles hadn’t been holding the team back.

New Vegas‘ lead world builder, Scott Everts, spoke about the game’s development in a recent interview with PCGamesN, and he had some interesting ideas about where the game could have gone had it not been restricted by the game engine.

“[Fallout: New Vegas] would have been a lot different if it was PC only,” Everts said. “We had a lot of plans early on. Like, ‘Here’s where the water is stored, here’s where the farms are, here’s where the government is centralized.’ We had it all planned out—it wasn’t just a bunch of random stuff.”

But then, Everts said, lots of those elements had to be pared down. The Mojave Wasteland would have featured “more separate zones” and a “big wall around the whole thing,” while the game itself would have benefitted from a performance perspective.

“We would have had fewer performance issues,” Everts said. “We did break it up a bit, but from my point of view it was a performance-related game and we had to fix things.”

Of course, no one knows what truly could have happened had the devs had more time and fewer restrictions. It’s always easier to speculate about how things might have been. Still, Obsidian Entertainment’s original vision is one that a lot of fans surely would have loved to see.

-Silky Never been a fan of the game anyway despite consoles 'killing' the game.

They should have just built it on the PC if they really wanted to make something bigger and better.

They should of have made that separate version for PC only and launched it afterwards, as a what could of been type of game.

Other game studios are making DLC for the backward compatible games. Would be cool to see then finish this and use backwards compatibility to run on Xbox one.

Its sad that the game got gimped because of consoles when PC would've been more than capable of running it.

Fallout nv was is my favorite game of all time. It would be dope if they did a remake when the next generation of consoles arrive but I don't see it happening
