Windows 10 closing in on Windows 7 Market Share

4.1
It’s the first of the month again, which means it’s once again time to read the market share tea leaves.

This month Netmarketshare’s data appears to have an error, claiming a 5% increase in Linux market share in one month, so I think it can be safely ignored.

More interesting is Statcounter’s numbers in the header image above, which shows a steady increase in Windows 10 web usage, seemingly at the expense of Windows 7 and most other versions of Windows.

Between Windows versions, Windows 10 now has 39.3% market share, less than 5% off the 43.99% market share of Windows 7. Going by the current trend Windows 10 should overtake Windows 7 by the end of 2017.

Interestingly, however, Statcounter shows a resurgence in Windows and Mac usage over the last few months, seemingly at the expense of Android and iOS. Reasons are of course not known, but it could be as simple as people spending more time at home with their laptop as the weather turns colder or students returning to class.

Going back to the Windows 7/Windows 10 battle, while Microsoft has abandoned their 1 billion Windows 10 devices by 2018 goal, many companies have confirmed that they are in the process of making the switch to the operating system, which should provide the boost the operating system needs to finally gain a clear desktop supermajority. This will be useful to help convince developers to target UWP and the Windows Store, which in the end may result in a more stable and reliable desktop computing experience for us all.

If you do upgrade to 10 i suggest finding a clean version stripped of all the junk.

Chat I personally loved how you could customize windows 7 with themes etc, yes it's possible on Windows 10 but they are all bad! although I do love WIndows 10 now as I've got use to it :)

Na trust there is some pretty cool themes out there for windows 10 you just need to know where to look :P

Craig I have no idea why people would still use 7. It's no longer supported and still fairly broken.

Do not like change. I upgraded when it was free, but i hate change. I didnt buy a new phone until my 3s wouldnt update anymore and became dead

Windows 10 is definitely better, in my opinion.

Wasn't it only a couple of weeks ago people where reportedly going back to windows 7. I do personally like Windows 10 but there is a lot of unnecessary stuff that comes with it.
