Xbox One Might Support USB Cameras Soon

4.3
Microsoft has confirmed that the company is exploring the use of USB cameras for streaming and broadcasting on the Xbox One.

The testing period for the new streaming tech won’t be available to every Xbox One player right away, but for those who are Alpha Ring insiders, they’ll be able to participate in the trial run. During the ongoing tests, the insiders will be able to take USB cameras that are typically reserved for PC use and plug them into their Xbox One to begin broadcasting, hopefully with no issues.

Being able to use a USB camera for the Xbox One will allow for more diverse options when it comes to using the Xbox’s services such as Skype or Mixer, both of the apps made more accessible by the USB options. Communicating with friends via the Xbox One’s Skype functionality will become much easier – and affordable – through the use of USB cameras, and up-and-coming streamers who hope to broadcast their gameplay will no longer be restricted by not opting for a Kinect.

Currently, the Kinect is the Xbox One’s tech that’s required for video-sharing. While it’s not too expensive for a camera, the move to include USB cameras in the list of compatible options is one that’s based on player feedback. A blog update from Microsoft Mixer discussed the drive to accommodate more players as one of the core reasons behind testing the USB cameras, but they’re asking for continued player feedback during the tests to ensure that the best experience is delivered.

However, one thing to keep in mind when using the USB camera option for broadcasting is that the devices’ microphones won’t be usable. Mixer explained in a reply to their initial tweet that other USB cameras don’t offer echo cancellation like the Kinect does, so for that reason, streamers will have to use a headset or an external mic will be necessary for the audio portion of your stream.

The testing phase for using USB cameras for broadcasting on the Xbox One is currently underway, so expect an update from Mixer on how the trials are going soon.
