Move over, PUBG: There’s a 400-player battle royale game in the works

4
Mathematically speaking, if PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds‘ 100-player PvP battle royale model is enough to sell 10 million copies, will a battle royale game with four times the players in each match sell 40 million copies?

We’re only asking because developer Automaton recently announced its upcoming game, currently titled Project X, and it sounds insane.

Utilizing Improbable’s cloud-based computing system SpatialOS and the ever-powerful CryEngine, Project X aims to not only support 1,000 players in a shared-world environment, but also to include a PUBG-style mode in which 400 players will fight for survival in a huge open-world map.

How huge? Well, according to Automaton, the map will be 144 square kilometers, making it a little over twice the size of PUBG‘s current map. Plus, thanks to the CryEngine, it’s going to look real pretty.

The enormous yet familiar last-person-standing MMO PvP mode is only one part of the game, which will also feature “strong character progression, social hubs, intelligent mission systems and global-scale player-driven narrative,” according to Automaton’s website. It sounds like there will be more to do in Project X than just hunt or be hunted.

You wouldn’t be alone if you never heard of the developer behind this massive undertaking. Automaton’s only other full title is Deceit, a six-player, asymmetrical survival-horror multiplayer game in which one player is “infected” and hunting the rest down while the “innocents” are trying to escape. The catch is that no one besides infected knows who the infected player is. It’ll be interesting to see how Automaton handles moving its development from a six-player game to a 1000-player game, because last time we checked, a thousand is way more than six.

Automaton plans to launch Project X sometime in 2018, but it’s shooting to have a playable version of the game ready in the spring.

Xbox 400 people holy shit I couldn't even imagine the mayhem!

tbh I was thinking if this would actually be too many - in let's say a PUBG sceanario this would be too hectic, forcing all those players into smaller areas as the game progresses.

Mitochondria Only downside to such massive player mass servers. There will be downtime and quite a few downed servers at a time.

I have no idea how they will accommodate so many.

There gonna have to get some good servers this sounds like a big project.

Only read the title, and all I can think about is how long that game would be. Don't own pubg but like others who don't, I watch on twitch and those are already kinda long haha

400 is crazy unless you have a map 4x bigger than what they have now, goodness
