PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds wants to copy one aspect of Destiny

4.5
You’d be hard pressed to find a lot of similarities between PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Destiny. One is a punishing battle royale multiplayer game where players start each round with nothing and have to scavenge any weapon they can find in the hopes of murdering their opponents before their opponents murder them. The other is a fantastical romp through the solar system where players dance a lot and acquire so many absurdly-powerful guns that they literally have to start throwing them away.

Still, despite the vastly different vibes, Battlegrounds creator Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene cites one aspect of Destiny as a touchstone for what he’d like to achieve with the console version of his game: the way its gunplay feels on a controller.

“There are games like Destiny that really get auto-aim and controllers in an FPS feeling good,” Greene told GamesIndustry.biz (via PC Gamer). “And I think that with Microsoft’s help it’s really going to get it feeling like a good shooter on console. We want to give the same experience. We want PC and Xbox to be identical in terms of the experience you have playing the game.”

Microsoft, of course, recently announced a somewhat fuzzily defined partnership with PUBG developer Bluehole that will see it arrive on Xbox One before any other console.

Another benefit of that deal, apparently, will be improvements to PUBG‘s water, courtesy of another game you might not expect. “I was at the Microsoft event last night talking to the Sea of Thieves guys. They said they loved the game, they play it a lot, but, ‘Oh, [your] water.’ I mean, our water is not very good, but Rare has great water tech. They said, ‘We should share some knowledge.’ That’s a great thing about being part of a network of studios. We can get that water tech, essentially for free, and we can share stuff with them. That’s just invaluable, because their water is great. Having that would really finish off our world nicely.”

So who knows? When PUBG arrives on Xbox One, it could be sporting gunplay as smooth as Destiny 2‘s, water as pretty as Sea of Thieves‘, and more borrowed tech and inspiration we haven’t even heard about yet.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is now out in Steam Early Access on PC, with plans to launch on Xbox One before year’s end.

Katsumi It would be nice to see them draw inspiration from other games. Interested to see what this shapes out to look like.

agreed, it's good to see other developers from other games helping out when needed such as with SOT - can't wait for Xbox release.

That's pretty cool how they did it like that to make it more level

It would be good if they could get the same gunplay like feel - still a brilliant game either way.

Can't wait to see how this game looks and plays on the Xbox. Been wanting to give it a try for awhile now.

Microsoft should be able to mimic something like this when it comes to the controller. Really can't wait to try out the beta in the insider hub when it releases.
