Xbox One adding keyboard and mouse support soon—new details revealed

4.1
At a recent PAX West 2017 panel hosted by Xbox’s Larry Hyrb, Microsoft VP of gaming for Xbox and Windows, Mike Ybarra, laid out the plans for keyboard-and-mouse (KBM) support on the Xbox One, saying that we’ll see the “first games supporting keyboard and mouse soon.”

This is coming from a video on Twitter that captured Ybarra’s response to a question about KBM support on Xbox One. In order to bring KBM to Xbox One, Ybarra said that Microsoft will “leave it a lot to developer choice” as to whether game-makers want to bring KBM to the console. On top of that, Microsoft will “coach developers” on how to best integrate KBM, especially when it comes to competitive multiplayer games like first-person shooters and real-time strategy games.

“If you have a competitive game, people probably are going to want the choice to say, ‘I’ll play with other keyboard-and-mouse people, I’ll play with only controller people, or I’ll play with any of those,'” Ybarra said.

While it sounds like the first KBM-supported games on Xbox One are coming soon, Ybarra did not specify which games will first introduce the new-to-Xbox One control scheme. Our best guess is that real-time strategy spin-off Halo Wars 2 will be the first game to get KBM support on Xbox One, as Phil Spencer had previously announced that KBM support was coming to the console version of the game prior to its release in February 2017.

While Ybarra’s recent info-dump about KBM support might seem promising, we’ll believe it when we see it. KBM support for Xbox One has been in the works since at least 2015, and Spencer even said that KBM was “months away” back in June 2016. Most recently, at Microsoft’s Build 2017 conference back in May, a senior program manager said that Xbox One dev kits for Creators Program developers would be getting full keyboard support, though nothing concrete was ever mentioned about mouse support.

RedWood i feel this would create and unfair advantage yes but if anyone can do it i dont see a problem

They will probably only allow it for certain games.

Cool to see the support but won't be something I'll be using probably.

Maspro I cannot wait for this, I hope destiny 2 is on the list. Playing with a controller just doesn't seem right with this game.

I feel like it would create an unfair advantage.

This will be great, mean's people don't have to go out of their way just to use keyboard and mouse with adapter's and converter's. Just plug and play. Great addition especially with PUBG on the horizon for Xbox

kittyderpy People already do it with adapters. This just allows everyone to use it. I say this is a good thing.
been thinking about this, so where do those using adapters get placed? Will it be recognized as anything but a controller and placed with the K&M group or still play against controller users?
