Xbox One X games may get content that’s inaccessible on older models

While the One X is much more powerful than Microsoft’s other consoles, Microsoft has, in the past, promised users that content will remain the same across devices. If you buy an Xbox One game, it will work regardless of which console within the family you’re using. Now, though, Xbox VP Mike Ybarra has said that content will ultimately be up to the developers.

“I think largely we want to empower the developer to make the choices for themselves,” Ybarra told VG 24/7, referring to the topic of content and features being locked to the One X. “There will be a premise of look, games have to run on both. Of course X is going to have better visuals, maybe a higher frame rate… it’s up to the developer. It depends on what they want to do.”

Ybarra added that Microsoft is already walking “a fine line” in regards to the split in consoles. The One X is much more powerful, but still has to belong to the “family of devices” rather than being a break between generations.

“When you approach it like [a family of devices], there’s a consistency level, an expectation that if you’re on S or X, that must be met,” Ybarra explained.

This means that although individual developers may decide to lock certain content or features behind one console or another, Microsoft wants to keep as much content as possible open to all Xbox One devices.

“Consumers will expect [improved performance on the Xbox One]—they’ll see, they’ll feel that difference,” Ybarra said. “But from a look and feel I want to keep this as consistent as possible across those devices.”

The Xbox One X is currently up for pre-order. It launches on November 7th.

Makes sense from a business perspective. Annoying for the consumer however.

Yes obviously this will be a thing but not for a good while untill the hardware is just deemed too old and basically useless. Developers will be building more hardware intensive games that may not be-able to run on the original Xbox One or playstation.

developers won't do that at all because of the PlayStation they won't add more content on the Xbox one x and leave the PlayStation out if you're wondering I'm personally a Xbox person. they will wait until both consoles are up to date because people will complain about it and they will lose profit on the sales
