Microsoft on CoD: WWII And Destiny 2’s Lack Of Xbox One X Enhancements

4.3
Since announcing the beefy new Xbox One X, Microsoft has been boasting about the long list of games that will be specially enhanced for the system. No doubt, the 100-games-strong list of Xbox One X enhanced games is impressive, but it’s missing two pretty major names – Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2.

Now, here’s where the conspiracy theories come in – are Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2 not on the list because they won’t be enhanced for the Xbox One X, or is Sony just blocking an official announcement? Sony and Activision have a very close relationship, with both CoD: WWII and Destiny 2 releasing their DLC on PlayStation 4 first. Could these timed exclusivity deals include a clause that Activision can’t promote the fact that their games may look/run better on Xbox One X?

Eurogamer posed this question to Microsoft’s vice president of gaming Mike Ybarra, and he seemed to strongly hint something was going on behind the scenes.

“We’re working with all developers, including the ones [behind Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2] to make sure the best versions are on Xbox One X and it's up to them when they want to actually talk about what, if anything, they are doing. We want to align with their messaging and what they want to say, when they want to say it. We work with them on timing, how we can help them optimize. I can't comment on any limitations they might have.”

Eurogamer then explicitly asked if Sony was forcing Activision to keep their Xbox One X enhancements on the downlow, to which Ybarra replied…

“I have no direct knowledge of that.”

Well, that isn’t exactly a denial. Just because Ybarra has no direct knowledge of the situation, doesn’t mean it isn’t generally known within Microsoft. Honestly, this is all a bit silly – in the end the proof will be in the pudding. If the Xbox One X versions of Call of Duty: WWII and Destiny 2 look or run better, people will know from day one, so any effort to hide it is kind of pointless.

Elsewhere in the interview, Ybarra discussed the delay of Crackdown 3 and the fact that the Xbox One X basically only has one major launch title (Forza Motorsport 7). Apparently, the system doesn’t really need launch titles:

“When I look at the Xbox family I don't feel like we have to come out with six new games just for X, it'll play everything that's come out, back compat will work on it, elements like that. I don't know if we're still in the world of having to have big, exclusive titles just for one box, versus the promise that games you buy will work and look even better on X. It's up to the user to choose.”

I dont really care if theres not many one x enhancements just want the game to be good.

If the gameplay on CoD is good that's all I care about tbh, Games are going to be looking sexy for sure

Oh well I'm sure they will be beautiful looking, my guess is there just holding back but for two very popular games like that I doubt they would not make it look as best as they can.

MuahaMods It really is **** sad. Im pretty confident Sony are trying to hold back the Xbox One X to make their console not suck as much. I saw a long thread on another forum about it and everyone pretty much thought the same thing. D2 On Xb1X should easly run 1080p60, no reason not to apart from stupid sony.

Of course they are! That's how business works. They have deals with these companies and they want to make sure that the game runs well on their console. But it's also about the number of consoles sold. Odds are most people will buy destiny 2 and never play it on the xbox one x. It comes out months before the console does. Everyone will be playing on the standard xbox one. No point in enhancing something most people will never see.

Your point makes ZERO sense. Why on earth would they not bother to enhance because the game comes out first? There are so many titles already named with enhancements. I'd love to play D2 @ 60fps on Xb1X, would be miles better than xbox one.

Because most of the people that are going to buy the game will have bought it by then. There's no point in advertising "Wait 3 months for the one x to come out and you can play in 4k!". There's also not going to be that many people that have a one x at launch. It's the same reason a lot of games coming out right before the ps4 pro aren't enhanced on there. They also have exclusivity deals with playstation probably making it so the game looks better on there. Only reason I'm not getting it on pc.

Hopefully the developers see sense... they want to display the best product they possibly can. Currently the Xbox One X is the only console that can do that.
