Xbox One X Hardware Can’t Run Shooter Killing Floor 2 In Full 4K

4.3
Since unveiling the Xbox One X at E3 2017, Microsoft has done plenty of boasting about the system’s power, but it seems the system may not be quite as thoroughly future-proofed as the company claims it is. The Xbox One X isn’t even out yet, and developers are already bumping up against the edges of what it’s capable of.

According to Killing Floor 2 developer Tripwire Interactive, the Xbox One X is very easy to work with, but it doesn’t have the power to play their game in full 4k resolution (2160p) without sacrificing framerate…

“Xbox One X was a very smooth and easy platform to develop for. It took very little engineering effort to get our base Xbox One game running on the Xbox One X. It took maybe 4 hours of programming effort total.

Killing Floor 2 runs at native 1800p, fixed resolution (no checkerboarding) on Xbox One X. We did experiment with true 4k rendering, but the frame rate drop was a bit too significant. We don’t have a specific frame rate target for XBox One X, although the game does run at higher frame rates than the base Xbox One, even at 1800p resolution. We will be using Ultra textures on Xbox One X. We are also increasing the resolution of our shadow maps and shadow draw distance.”

Killing Floor 2 also runs at 1800p resolution on the PlayStation 4 Pro, although that version of the game uses checkerboard upscaling rather than displaying at a native 1800p.

These kinds of stories really drive home the futility of trying to stay ahead of the curve with half-steps like the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. What’s cutting edge one week is obsolete the next, and consoles will never be able to keep up with PCs when it comes to upgrades.

Bit disappointing that a 4K console cant even play at 4K.

RepBanditPosted:

They say this new console can run 4k but yet it psychically can not. False advertisement?

Mikey Why is this though, I'll let this one slide but to be honest I don't wanna start hearing about more games that can't handle 4k lol, that's the whole point me getting the console lol.

I'm genuinely mad that this is how they are being marketed. There are a few reasons why. Firstly, 4K is still a new technology that I personally couldn't care less about, and I know I'm not the only one. I am perfectly happy with 1080p. Secondly, their hardware can't even hit benchmarks that they said it would be able to; how can they expect their box to perform the same as a PC who's graphics card costs as much as the entire console? Lastly, 4K is pretty overhyped... not to mention moderately misleading in name.

Instead of reaching for 4k, Microsoft should aim for incredible performance at 1080p. They could boost graphic quality AND frame rates by a ton instead of having to bump stuff like texture quality down to reach their benchmarks. The world isn't really ready for this technology (clearly), and those that are interested in it are definitely better off buying themselves PCs.

THIS! I strongly agree with you! Couldn't care less about the whole 4k

Its gotten to the point where pc gaming is easier than console gaming my god

You would think of that sort of console the games could run easily on that console while running in 4K.

Planned obsolescence. Xbox isn't gonna be true 4k for a while considering most people's gaming PCs can't handle 4k yet, I think that I'll just buy a new PC instead.
