Nintendo Switch gets its first video streaming app—but not everywhere

4.1
The Nintendo Switch is getting its first video streaming app, but not in the United States.

Anyone who owns a Switch may have noticed that the dashboard is a little bare. At the moment, you can fill it with games, but there are no other apps or services available to download. The lack of basic video streaming services like YouTube and Netflix seem particularly absent. However, if the state of the Switch in Japan is anything to go by, that may be about to change.

Japanese Switch owners will be able to install NicoNico, a video-sharing platform similar to YouTube, as an app on their Switches later this week. The NicoNico account made a short trailer showing what this looks like, and while it’s all in Japanese, it’s worth a watch for an idea of what other similar apps may look like in the future.

While Nintendo hasn’t solidified any plans to bring video streaming services to the U.S., it’s something that Nintendo promises is in the works. A few months ago, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé confirmed that Nintendo is talking to a “range of companies,” including Nintendo, Hulu, and Amazon, and promised that these features would come “in time.”

The focus, though, according to Nintendo, will always be to put the games first.

Nice to see they bring out some amazing apps for the Nintendo Switch, just make it, even more, easier for me to buy it.

Cool that they're putting apps on here, hopefully they keep putting more.

Thought they would've had this and some more apps but atleast they're starting to push stuff out now!

This is great to here but they need more apps for sure. Can't wait to see the future of Nintendo.

They need to push out more of these apps everywhere alot of people use them now.. its almost weird a console not having them.

Wouldn't of expected video streaming to not be on a console, feel like that's the first thing console devs want these days.

A little odd how they're not introducing it to the US. Video streaming is something many people want so not having available is just stupid
