Rocket League 2 not happening as sequel

4.4
Rocket League 2 is unlikely to materialise as developer Psyonix sees the game as more of a platform rather than a franchise, its VP of publishing has said.

Speaking with GI.biz, Jeremy Dunham revealed that the studio has no intention of ‘exploiting’ the popular car-based footie romp, which launched exactly two years ago today for PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, with a Rocket League sequel. You’d be forgiven for expecting a follow-up, however; Rocket League achieved huge critical and commercial success, notching up 10 million downloads and an additional one million via boxed sales.

If that wasn’t enough, as of today Rocket League sports a whopping 33 million players and remains consistently popular, with 1.6 million daily players and 3.3 million players per week. In addition, Psyonix estimates that around 70 percent of Rocket League owners have purchased DLC for the game.

"We look at Rocket League as a platform, and not as a franchise for us to make very different versions of," said Dunham. "Rocket League is a game that, as it expands, it is still the same game. It is not Rocket League Karts or Rocket League RPG. We don't want to exploit the brand. We want to reward the players, that's how we look at it. Our vantage point is that if we are going to make a new game, then it needs to be a new game, we want it to be its own thing that's built on its own merit and its own expectations. It will have its own team, its own philosophies and it will be a separate thing.

"We do have a team internally that is dedicated to coming up with new game ideas. We have several game ideas that live and die in a few weeks, and others that last even longer and we are exploring. For us, what is great, is that we are in no hurry. We don't have to get something out just for the case of our financial security. That's been the biggest benefit of Rocket League. It has given us the creative freedom to take our time and come up with something else."

A sequel would be pointless and it would just ruin Rocket Legue anyways so good.

Not at all need really, the second one would just be rubbish anyway, as the first one is just amazing.

Good. There's absolutely no need for a sequel

I don't really see how you would make a rocket league 2. The game play itself is pretty unique

SakonPosted:

Doesnt surprise me, there is no real need for a sequel anyway.

I'm glad with this, a sequel would ruin the fun as I can't see it ever being needed, just updates.

Expected, only way I could see a sequel is if it's an entirely different game, but that's not really a sequel either.

CriticaIPosted:

no story / campaign mode = no sequel
