New benchmarks reveal just how well current games run on Xbox One X

4.5
Sure, we’ve been told that the Xbox One X is the “world’s most powerful console,” but now we have a better sense of how powerful it actually is, thanks to recent benchmarks revealed by Microsoft for how existing Xbox One games will upscale for the more powerful Xbox One X.

Digital Foundry cobbled together metrics released by developers of nine different titles running at different native resolutions, spanning from 1080p all the way down to 720p, and looked at how those titles ran when scaled up to 4K resolution. The titles weren’t specifically named, but Digital Foundry made some educated guesses based on the descriptions provided.

The biggest performance improvements could be seen in games that scaled up to 4K from 1080p, and these improvements are admittedly impressive. Forza Motorsport 7, for instance, runs at a 13ms frame time (or about 60 FPS frame rate) at 1080p on a current Xbox One, but running at 4x resolution on an Xbox One X, the upcoming racing game was capable of running at 90fps (even if it will ultimately be capped at 60fps) with GPU to spare.

Microsoft wasn’t content at scaling 1080p games up to 4K, however; it also wanted to push 900p titles to see how well they would perform with a 4K resolution upgrade. Clearly this takes much more GPU to achieve, but the results aren’t as bad as you might expect. Two of the 900p30 titles tested barely see a dip in frame rate, despite experiencing a much bigger GPU strain that 1080p titles with the same upgrade. This means that earlier Xbox One games could conceivably be considered for native 4K upgrades.

The one 720p title listed—which is more than likely Star Wars Battlefront—didn’t fare as well. Given 9x increase in resolution, the game’s frame rate would dip to about half its original FPS.

Keep in mind that these metrics are a “snapshot” of GPU performance running on older Xbox One X development kits. This means that, while the numbers might be a bit skewed considering fluctuations in GPU performance while running a game, we could also see further performance improvements on not only more recent development kits but also in the actual retail version of the Xbox One X when it arrives November 7th.

Not only that, but Microsoft is encouraging companies to take advantage of checkerboard rendering to boost their existing games’ performance on Xbox One X. Even upcoming games like Assassin’s Creed Origins and Anthem are seeing impressive performance results by utilizing checkerboard rendering to reach that 2160p resolution. In other words, those 900p games might run even better with a 4K resolution upgrade if those developers were to take advantage of checkerboard rendering.

All in all, the Xbox One X will be capable of doing some amazing things to enhancing the performance of existing Xbox One games, if the developers decide to release the appropriate patches. For a full rundown of these Xbox One X metrics, check out Digital Foundry’s in-depth video breakdown:
