Xbox One X has one massive downside if you don’t own a 4K TV

4.5
It’s a good thing that the Xbox One X comes with a 1TB hard drive, because you’re going to need the extra space.

One of the most-touted features of the new consoles is its ability to play games in full 4K. However, this may not always be a good thing. As one Microsoft representative has confirmed, the console will download 4K assets for all games—regardless of whether or not you actually own a 4K TV.

“With the launch of Xbox One X, when it comes to game content our intention is to download the correct assets to the correct console,” the representative told Stevivor. “This means, regardless of the TV you are playing on, 4K assets will be downloaded to Xbox One X (if available) and the standard 1080p assets will be downloaded to an Xbox One S.”

This also means that even though 4K files are available, the Xbox One S will continue to work by upscaling 1080p games to 4K, rather than working straight from 4K assets. The representative added that “specific implementation” of how these assets are divided will be “up to the developer.”

Still, all of those 4K assets are bound to take up a ton of memory. Forza Horizon 7, for example, will take up 100GB of space with the highest-resolution textures, meaning that one game alone could be a tenth of your Xbox One X’s hard drive. According to the representative, Microsoft is working on a way to make the downloads more efficient for users, but the wording makes it sound as though any solutions will be left up to developers on a case-by-case basis.

The Xbox One X releases on November 7th, with a starting price of $499.

ltbess If we are being truthful, Forza is not a small game as is and having a game take up 100GB using high resolution assets isn't that big of a deal. Most games were about 60-100 GB on Xbox One and Xbox One S currently. Let's not get too bent out of shape on this one in my opinion.

couldnt agree more, plus like theyve said playing these games on a 1080p display will still look better than before, the article is more than likely copied from a ps4 fanboy page, its amazing how many BIG pages are fanboys these days calling themselves gaming websites but actually favour one way or the other

4k games get supersampled on 1080p displays which explains why you still get the 4k assets. This is a big deal and increases graphical fidelity quite noticeably. See https://youtu.be/906EEPlB3Ao

Not to mention Microsoft doesn't know if you're simply plugged into a 1080p set temporarily.

Perhaps they'll give the option to download only 1080p assets if you need space more than supersampling, but I imagine that could complicate things for the majority who simply want it to work without having to think about it.

Wow, kinda sucks. I hope they bring an option to download 4K assets separately or we'll be forced to pay an extra $100 for more space...
