Why Nintendo decided to allow cross-platform multiplayer on Switch

4.2
Nintendo stole the show at E3 2017 with reveals of new Kirby, Yoshi, and Metroid titles, as well as Super Mario Odyssey. There’s one feature, though, that has some fans even more excited: Nintendo embracing cross-platform play with other consoles for games like Rocket League and Minecraft.

In a recent interview with GamesBeat, Nintendo of America corporate communications director Charlie Scibetta explained Nintendo’s reasoning. It’s pretty simple: Nintendo is trying to give the players what they want.

“If it’s right for gamers, we’re going to entertain it,” Scibetta said. “If we can make it work, we’re going to do it.

“We want people to have a good time. In the case of Rocket League, if that’s what [players]… want to be able to play cross platform. We said, let’s make that happen. It’s really not more complex than that. Every game is different. Some games are great for multiplayer, some are better as a single-player experience, some are better in all kinds of situations for all kinds of games. Rocket League works best with cross platform play. Let’s make it happen.”

Of course, Scibetta added, the individual developer of each game will have a say in whether or not a game is cross-platform. It’s not all Nintendo’s decision. “In [the case of Rocket League and Minecraft], the developer is into it, so let’s make it happen. We tend to give most of the decisions in terms of what functionality to use for the system—for example, the game pad back in the Wii U days, or motion control for the Wii. We place those decisions in the hand[s] of the development team.”

This attitude could be a good sign that future games on Nintendo’s systems will have the potential to play with others on the PC and Xbox One (sadly, Sony still hasn’t joined in on the cross-play bandwagon). At the moment, though, the only two that we know are getting the feature for sure are Minecraft and Rocket League.

It's a good decision on there end but I can't believe Sony won't agree to this what a shame.

Sony needs to stop being a little girl and just understand customer satisfaction and allow cross platform.

Smart move, gotta put playstation in the view of the public for how shameful they are acting about gaming, total control will never exist in the gaming world, dumb for them to try and go that way.

Sakon I really hope Sony decides to join in on cross-platform multiplayer. It would be awesome to be able to play with friends regardless of the console.

Highly doubt it because they want "control" which is sad to see tbh.

If its right for gamers, were going to entertain it, What a great quote. So happy to see some console's joining in Cross-Platform especially with Rocket League. Cant wait to see more on this.
