GTA5 Faces Player Uprising Over ‘Illegal Mods’ Controversy

4.6
GTA5 may be the most popular game in the world (or one of them- seriously, it’s at 80 million units sold now), but even it cannot afford to piss off its players. And yet, by declaring GTA mods as ‘illegal’ recently, that is exactly what publisher Take 2 have done.

The result? The result is that players are now rising up against the game in droves. Steam reviews for the game have become ‘overwhelmingly negative’ (Steam’s words, not mine), with over 30,000 reviews in the last 30 days being negative– most of them coming after Take 2’s cease and desist for the OpenIV modding tool, and citing their stance against mods as the reason. A petition on Change.Org has over 40,000 signatures, too, as players are demanding that Take 2 reverse their decision.

All of this is well and good- but as long as the game continues to make obscene amounts of money, which it will since the bulk of its sales come from the console version, as well as from GTA: Online, Rockstar and Take 2 are unlikely to care. Plus, I wish I could say that PC players are showing resolve, but the game is currently #7 in Steam’s concurrent players list, with a peak of over 92,000 players playing it at once earlier today.

wow, I find this quite suprising considering it's only SP.

C4 I still dont see the big deal about them getting mad over single player mods... Its not hurting anyone at all

It hurts the people who only bought the game for the Single Player Mods. Not everyone plays online on GTA.

This has screwed over the GTA5 Community. Then even screwed the creators of Lexicon and Serendipity. Both of their site has gone offline to due "effective immediately we are ceasing all maintenance, development and distribution of the Serendipity cheat menu services"

I can understand take two being frustrated with players modding accounts and still selling them for next gen. As they make a lot of their money off shark cards and such and players get a lot more for their money buying a pre modded account.. But, as Glock stated, does seem a bit extreme to make this illegal.. Gta is way too old of a game in general for them to be this obsessed over it still. I think it's time for a whole new GTA in general.

I'm surprised with how much they actually care about single player, i'd understand if it was MP but it isn't.

Where's that No Fun Allowed picture when you need it, i can undersatnd why people are mad, the fun part about gta (in my opinion) was finding glitches and messing around with them, remember the swingset glitch on gta4? they didn't patch that and i had hours on hours of fun with that simple glitch.

Same with the tank glitch on gta a while back, it was simple fun, nothing gamebreaking just silly gameplay. and they patched it.

Just because it's declared illegal. I'll still mod single player and don't plan to stop. Want to arrest me? Be my guest. My guess is you won't make it past my mailbox.

(Just kidding) but it's a little extreme for them to be doing this. Single player hurts no one.
