The Xbox One X could have been a lot more expensive

4.6
If you’re chafed about the Xbox One X’s $499 price point, at least you can take solace in the fact that Microsoft isn’t gouging you for profit.

That’s because, as with most console hardware sales, Microsoft isn’t actually making money off the “world’s most powerful console.”

In an interview with Business Insider, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said that Microsoft does not make any money selling the Xbox One X at its current price point, but he would not confirm that the company is taking a loss, either.

That means that Microsoft might be breaking even on the actual hardware sales, which is an interesting way for Xbox to hedge its bets with its latest console while raking in the cash with its software sales and subscriptions services (like Xbox Live Gold).

There are two major reasons why the Xbox One costs as much as it does: the tech inside that makes it a true 4K gaming machine, and the fact that the package the tech lives inside is so compact.

On top of that, while it is $100 more than the PS4 Pro, the Xbox One X boasts a healthy amount more power than Sony’s equivalent offering.

Of course, the Xbox One X’s price-point doesn’t bring into consideration how much a brand-new 4K TV will cost in order for you to get the most out of the console when it launches on November 7th.

I am really happy with their chosen price point for the console.

Mad respect for them not wanting people to fork out £600+. Honestly with the games they have coming up and the range of subscription services I think its a fair trade off for breaking even with the console.

Halo 4K TVs arent even as expensive as they were before, I bought one for $360. Glad the price of the console is only $600

The price of the console is $500 not $600 unless you're in the UK it's a little bit more expensive

To me it's a bargain for the specs, I'd be happy paying that price

i was actually expecting it to be around £600 - £700 when i first saw the specs... this ain't bad at all compared to prices people pay for phones and stuff now a days.

Urf You can have the strongest console all damn day, and you can boast about it all you want but if you have barely any games to play on it then it's useless. There are no good exclusives for Xbone, the best you have is Forza and Halo and those aren't even that good.

Sony has good exclusives but more than 90% of them are single player games that you are going to play to completion a couple times and never touch again.

I for one don't really play many exclusives, mostly the big titles

Might be just me but I hate exclusives, cross play is better, larger variety and more likely to get placed with people near your skill in competitive matches. Halo has sucked ass since H3's player base started fading away. Not sure what u mean by forza not being good, only exclusive I still play to this day since its release and can not wait for F7. Don't need many games tho, forza RL BF1 overwatch and siege have kept me occupied since I bought a one back in 2015

OMV More power but need the TV to go along with it which costs more than the console in most case's. Still excited for the launch tho!

True, though the picture will be noticeably better on 1080p TV's too. I'm thinking of upgrading to 4K TV but I don't want smart TV, looked around and looks like you cannot get standard 4K TV's, they're all smart TV's... Unless I get like a monitor and use it as a TV xD

Them being seen as the power console, and cheaper then Playstation looks really looking good for them. I think they made the right move with this. Since they did not state they are also losing money there still profit to be made for them.
