E3 2017: Sony “refused” to join Minecraft cross-play

4.8
During their E3 press conference yesterday, Microsoft announced that Minecraft will be supporting cross-platform play, unifying players on console, mobile, Windows 10 and VR builds of the game.

The Nintendo Switch was confirmed as one of the consoles, but there was nothing on the PS4. Earlier today, Jez Cordon from Windows Central tweeted the explanation for this. Sony didn’t want in.

“RE: cross platform Minecraft. Yes to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation refused.”

Expanding on the comment, he said, “Microsoft said it’s their hope for all modern versions to connect to each other. But I got separate info that Sony refused.”

Corden said he didn’t ask for comment as he doesn’t cover PlayStation, but “it’s confirmed that it won’t connect to Nintendo/Windows/Xbox versions of the game.”

Minecraft’s Aubrey Norris told GamesBeat, “We can’t speak for Sony, but as we said, we would love to have our PlayStation 4 community join our Minecraft unification plans.”

There’s plenty of speculation as to why Sony refused, and a number of comments on the cross-play feature, like this gem.

They will end up regretting this decision in the future.

Crossplay is a major way to connect people on different platforms, it's a shame that developers or publishers decline implementing it, Sony with Minecraft, Friday the 13th developers with PC and console, Dead by Daylight developers with PC and console. I don't understand why they wouldn't want to include it if the game isn't remotely close to being competitive.

I'm not sure if this was the right move on Sony's end. The cross-platform gaming is a really cool idea and can lead to more people buying the game in the first place.

No matter the device, will soon be able to play together, Mojang announced during Xbox briefing during E3 2017

Didn't understand why they would do this, to be honest.

OMV I felt this coming after seeing Win10, Xbox and Switch in the minecraft trailer and no PS4, It's honestly their loss. A great thing to be involved in that no doubt will boost minecraft. Cant believe console wars still exist.

Yea it's so silly people still argue over what console is superior, there isn't one better than the other. I have both consoles for the awesome exclusives that both consoles have to offer but I do find myself on my Xbox more only because I'm a long time Halo fan.

I guess its Sony loss. It would be nice for all platforms to come together on a couple of popular games.
