E3 2017: Sony “refused” to join Minecraft cross-play

4.8
During their E3 press conference yesterday, Microsoft announced that Minecraft will be supporting cross-platform play, unifying players on console, mobile, Windows 10 and VR builds of the game.

The Nintendo Switch was confirmed as one of the consoles, but there was nothing on the PS4. Earlier today, Jez Cordon from Windows Central tweeted the explanation for this. Sony didn’t want in.

“RE: cross platform Minecraft. Yes to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation refused.”

Expanding on the comment, he said, “Microsoft said it’s their hope for all modern versions to connect to each other. But I got separate info that Sony refused.”

Corden said he didn’t ask for comment as he doesn’t cover PlayStation, but “it’s confirmed that it won’t connect to Nintendo/Windows/Xbox versions of the game.”

Minecraft’s Aubrey Norris told GamesBeat, “We can’t speak for Sony, but as we said, we would love to have our PlayStation 4 community join our Minecraft unification plans.”

There’s plenty of speculation as to why Sony refused, and a number of comments on the cross-play feature, like this gem.

It's terrible to think that Sony would do such thing and reject something big like this. It's sad.

This is really disappointing, I'd love to see cross platform between all consoles.

That just hurts playstation to be honest. Why refuse

Really starting to look like Sony just don't care about their players. I'm seeing so much negativity on their end for things people want.

I'm a PlayStation player and this annoys me. To say these companies are allegedly all about making consoles and games 'for the player' yet when things like this come up, the companies can't come together due to their own ego's.

I know people who have the Xbox, people who I used to play with on the 360 every day, so it sucks not being able to play with old friends.

I can see why though, people would buy xbox ones as they're cheaper and play with their PS4 friends using the cross platform app. It would be a loss of money in Sonys eyes. Would of had been nice if they took one on the chin though

Wow. What a bunch of a holes. That would've been amazing.

It would be nice if they changed their minds but I don't think they will to be honest the decision if probably final.

This is exactly what the problem is, the non-cooperation for cross platform games. This goes both ways. I believe any game that can be cross platform, should be cross platform. From a consumer standpoint, this is nothing but good.

Very happy to see Minecraft doing this, will really help bring everyone together!

Well thats really dumb, Hopefully they change their minds :/
