Sony exec calls Switch a great success, doesn’t see it as competition

4.5
When it comes to the ever-growing console war, Sony Interactive Entertainment America’s President and CEO, Shawn Layden, doesn’t see the fast-selling Nintendo Switch as competition, but rather as an ally.

In an interview with Time, Layden gave kudos to Nintendo’s latest console, calling it “a great success for Nintendo,” not only because of its fantastic sales, but “it’s definitely what that fanbase has been waiting for.” As far as how PlayStation has stacked up against the new system, Layden claimed the Switch sales have not negatively affected PlayStation 4 numbers.

“When you look at our numbers, I think it shows that a lot of gamers are a two-console family,” he said. “And quite often these two consoles are PlayStation and Nintendo sitting side-by-side.” In essence this seems to be true, as Nintendo hasn’t been in the powerhouse performance game in years, rather opting to create family-friendly systems and churning out more exclusive properties like Mario and Zelda.

Perhaps Layden would feel differently if the Switch was launched in 2012 alongside the PlayStation Vita, causing a direct mobile against mobile console war. As for now, he explained the Vita didn’t hold up in the United States or Europe as well as it is currently in Japan, but Sony doesn’t have any plans to tackle the mobile market again in the foreseeable future.

Rui Am i only the one who see's "Sony's Marketing & Directors" as massive d!cks...

Lately I've noticed it aswell. It's like they're putting themselves on a ladder with saying "who would play this" about BC game's and saying "Its a great success but not a competitor" because they think Nintendo wont do better than them. Microsoft is hopefully going to knock them off that ladder with the Scorpio

Nintendo has always been that console for the family, N64, GameCube, Wii etc. I don't think Microsoft & Sony will ever have to worry about it as competition.

I know right! They keep saying that they aren't worried or aren't afraid of competition. They better be worried about the Scorpio. I think it'll really mess with their statistics a bit.
