There’s not much story presented within the game of Overwatch itself. Instead, most of what we know about its characters comes from animated shorts, comics, and the biographies of the characters listed on the site. Because of this, some characters have received much more spotlight than others, with characters like Overwatch‘s poster girl Tracer getting multiple shorts and comics, while others—like Pharah and Symmetra—have only a single comic.
“I worry about characters like Symmetra,” Kaplan told Polygon during an interview. “I think we could do a lot more with her, and we have a pretty cool arc we’d like to see her go through. Pharah is pretty underrepresented too, but we have huge plans for her, so I’m not worried about her.”
So, what could these huge plans be? Pharah has some interesting ties to the game’s lore that have barely been touched upon: She works at Helix Security International safeguarding an Egyptian Artificial Intelligence. It’s possible that this could be the focal point of a future story.
On Symmetra’s side, the hard-light engineer has been equally (and sadly) neglected. She’s barely gotten any legendary skins or other noteworthy items out of the past year of events, so focusing more attention on her could be an answer to neglected Symmetra fans.
Of course, the next big event happening in Overwatch is its anniversary celebration, so we may have to wait a little longer for these characters to get the spotlight. The one-year anniversary event kicks off in-game on May 23rd.
