First posted to the GTAForums, the image depicts a cowboy leaning up against a post in a bustling desert town. The forum immediately began picking the image apart, with people on both sides of the argument offering up their theories on the leak’s legitimacy.
On the surface, it looks like something that could have come from the upcoming Western game, but there are a number of reasons to be skeptical. First off, the image appears to have been shot from off-screen, making it harder to judge. Even more damning is that the user that posted it was new to the forum and left immediately after posting it, freeing themselves from any cross-examination.
If it is the real thing, users speculate that it is an earlier build of the game, as the visuals appear to be lacking some finer technical details. The image doesn’t seem to reveal anything major about that game that we haven’t learned from the previous reveal trailer—meaning it could be real, or it could be that a hoaxer was careful not to add anything new or contradictory.
Various online communities will undoubtedly continue scrutinizing the image to determine its legitimacy, but fans might get a gameplay reveal before that even happens. E3 2017 is right around the corner, and it’s difficult to imagine Rockstar keeping quiet for much longer when the game is due out this year.
It’s good that this image surfaced, as Red Dead fans have been growing antsy as of late, digging into anything and everything that might be a clue. Their previous opportunity was a recent trailer shooter believed to be associated with Red Dead Redemption 2, but many have since attributed that to the rumored Far Cry 5.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is slated to launch this fall on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
