The Project Scorpio dev kit has an easy tool to track your frame rate

4.3
While we’ve already seen what Microsoft’s Project Scorpio dev kit looks like, a new video that’s surfaced online shows the prototype it in action.

The console looks like a more sharp-edged Xbox One S, but what’s really remarkable is the small screen on the front of the unit. In the video, it displays technical information—such as the game’s frame rate—making it easy to see how the console is performing while playing various games. The buttons above the display can be used to change what the screen shows.

Microsoft promises that the Scorpio will be the most powerful console made to date, so it makes sense to include a built-in tool to make testing that claim easier. What we don’t know right now is whether this screen is just a dev kit tool, or whether it will be part of the final console.

Project Scorpio is set to launch this holiday season. Microsoft has yet to officially unveil it, but has promised that we’ll see it by E3 at the latest.

pleb Can someone inform me of the use of the dev kit?
Basically a slightly more powerful Xbox Scorpio that can be used to test and optimize games to see how they run and where the devs can optimize.

I'm liking the design. The little screen would be great on public consoles. All I'd want changed it to make the power button a button again. Sad to see that it's still a touch one that anything going near it can turn it off.

Skates I think the screen would be a nice addition to the final product. Could maybe even have it display the game or music playing etc.

Having a FPS counter for the game your running would be a nice little feature or just some general information about the game/ console

I don't think FPS counter is really necessary for a console that isn't a dev kit as it should always be at a stable 60fps (does the scorpio for 144?) I think.

I do like the little screen though. could be used for notifications or if you have music playing on a background app. Could display text messages as well.

But, for a decent quality screen with colours would probably add too much to the cost of each unit for non developer kits. Doubt it will happen.

The simple screen shown on the dev kit is fine as it is and would be nice like you said for notifications.
