Call Of Duty: WWII’s Audio Team Used Golf To Capture Some Effects

4.7
Sledgehammer Games is going all out to ensure that Call of Duty: WWII is the most authentic World War II-based shooter to date – and that’s a big task to meet, considering Infinity Ward’s previous work on the franchise. But the team is certainly going all out to ensure that such authenticity is captured – even if it means going to not-so-typical spots to do so.

According to Game Informer, Sledgehammer Games audio director Dave Swenson and his squad were talking about the smaller noises they were capturing, including capturing the effect of sloshing water and destroying trees and timber to make sure the perfect sounds were put into place.

However, for some of the effects, the team actually went to a rather unexpected place – a golf course. “One of the cool things I did… I love planes. Especially WWII planes, they sound really great. They’re hard to get though – not everyone has a WWII bomber that’s functioning and flying around,” Swenson noted. “So I was reading the newspaper and there was a day where a whole bunch of WWII bombers were flying in and going to be doing a lot of takeoffs and landings at the airport."

"I called the FAA and they wouldn’t let me on the airport grounds because it was too dangerous, so I checked out Google maps. I saw at the end of the runway there was a golf course, so I went and bought a round of golf. I stuck my recorders in my golf bag and camouflaged them, and went out to the third hole and played it all day long – it was right at the end of the runway. So when a bomber took off, I got amazing bomber flybys and recordings, I did that all day.”

The team went all out to make sure the sounds were authentic, including tank engines and fire effects. And, of course, judging by the trailer below, you can see how far it went in terms of capturing the game’s looks as well.

High expectations, they need to hit the bar just as well as they did with WaW

Now that's how you go out and actually put effort into a game.

Way to be committed and get the sound affects. I appreciate when they take their time for audio effects especially in movies. I love watching the behind the scenes and seeing how exactly they created some noises.

Its interesting to hear what a lot of games and movies use for sound theres some pretty interesting examples out there but they work

DeftonesPosted:

That's good to hear that they are actually dedicating to this game a lot.

I swear they've never worked so hard before for Sounds, I feel like in the past they've blown into the mic, then simply blown up the sound etc lmao

Toward Really hope they dont ruin this game

The article just talked about dedication to capturing the sounds. How would that possibly ruin the game?

ODSTPosted:

MikeStaysWoke Now this is dedication
I'm excited to see how accurate the audio is in eh game
Agreed! going to a golf course is an awesome idea and shows just how much authenticity they wanted when trying to capture nearby sounds. Most companies probably would've just given up after the FAA said no to coming on the tarmac.
