Report: Is Sony Preparing A New PlayStation For Next Year?

4.3
Sony has a lot going on with the gaming market these days, with the PlayStation 4 selling an impressive number of units, and the PlayStation 4 Pro doing pretty good as well. But does Sony have plans for an even newer system to come down the line?

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Macquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong has noted that he “expected Sony to release its next-generation PlayStation by the second half of 2018.”

The reporter behind the story has noted that this is the same “analyst who correctly predicted PS4 Pro and Slim,” but it still leaves a lot of questions.

First off, the PlayStation 4, which is available both in its original form and its PS4 Slim, is seeing quite a bit of success as of late, with games like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4 and forthcoming titles like God of War and Spider-Man looking to flourish its success. It’s hard to believe that Sony could think it’s old-hat at this point – it’s only just under four years old.

Secondly, what about the PlayStation 4 Pro? Sony has been pushing this as its big machine of choice as of late, with its 4K support and its “boost mode” working for older games. That said, it is kind of incomplete on the hardware side, since it can’t play Ultra 4K HD Blu-Rays right now, unlike Microsoft’s Xbox One S and Project Scorpio systems.

It is a slight possibility that Sony could be repackaging the PlayStation 4 Pro as a “next-gen machine” to keep up with the forthcoming Project Scorpio, and that could be the hardware that the company has in mind, instead of something brand new, along the lines of a PlayStation 5. But at this time, Sony isn’t saying anything, so your guess is as good as ours.

We’re likely to find out more in just a couple of months, as Sony will reveal all during its pre-E3 press conference in Los Angeles, including forthcoming game releases and console plans. By then, we should have a clearer idea of just what this new hardware might be – and if it’s worth the upgrade.

661King Id guess a 2018 reveal with a 2020 launch date.

Doubt it. They need a console to compete with Scorpio as soon possible not in 2020.

they need to rival or better Xbox's Project Scorpio. the only thing Sony can do is try to better the console to get more people to come over to it. Sony don't make any money on console sales its common fact they are selling there consoles at a loss it cost Sony more to make the consoles than what they are selling them for the way Sony makes there money back is by exclusive games and advertising. but to be honest as a fan of Xbox and Sony i would be rather pissed off if i had just bought the PS4 Pro and Sony say there gonna release the PS5 next year. console gens should be every 6 years with a currant gen having 3 console models every 2 years.
