Digital Foundry has revealed that Microsoft’s upcoming Project Scorpio console will support AMD’s FreeSync technology and HDMI 2.1.

For those who have never heard of FreeSync, basically it syncs the refresh rate of a monitor with the game’s FPS to prevent the stuttering issues that occur when FPS drops below the monitor’s refresh rate. FreeSync and Nvidia’s G-Sync technology have been used on PC for a while now, but Scorpio will be the first console to offer support.

Currently FreeSync is only available on PC monitors and most are limited to a Display Port connection, which Scorpio does not support. However, the next generation of televisions will come equipped with support for variable refresh rates via HDMI 2.1, which will work with Microsoft’s console.

Digital Foundry also revealed that all older Xbox 360 and Xbox One game running on Scorpio will support the technology.

The official specs of Project Scorpio were revealed last week and include an eight-core custom CPU, a GPU with 40 customized compute units at 1172MHz, 12GB of GDDR5 memory with 326GB/s of bandwidth, a 1TB 2.5-inch hard drive, and a 4K UHD Blu-ray disc drive. The final look of the console will be revealed at E3 in June.
