Xbox Scorpio: New games won’t ruin current machines

4.7
While we know that Microsoft have no current plans to offer exclusive games for the Xbox Scorpio, we do know that the console will look to offer upgraded 4K gameplay over the base Xbox One - much like the PS4 Pro.

Being touted as the most powerful console ever created, it’s hard to expect anything other than a top price point for the console which is set to arrive later in 2017.

Early specs have revealed that the Xbox Scorpio will boast 6 teraflops of GPU, and will aim to deliver 4K gaming and support virtual reality.

Microsoft have pushed this pledge one step further by confirming that mixed-reality titles are also set to make their debut on both the Xbox One and Project Scorpio.

Those who own the base Xbox One, or even the Xbox One S, may not be at risk of losing out on any big games, but may still be feeling a little nervous over where Microsoft’s attentions will lie in the future.

Rory Newbrough, the lead designer at Hi-Rez Studios, was asked about this subject in a recent interview, confirming that developers were still very much focused on providing for where the bulk of their customers are.

“We like to develop from the bottom up, ensuring the low end machines and last generation hardware performs its best with the game,” he told Gamingbolt.

“The Scorpio brings an opportunity to take advantage of our ultra or enthusiast level settings, but we won’t lose sight of those of us who still hang on to their current machines.”

E3 2017 will be the place the Xbox Scorpio is fully unveiled, although Microsoft have hinted that they may look to offer a few teasers before June.

It follows reports earlier this week that claim the Xbox Scorpio will offer new 4K functionality that is not currently available on the PS4, or PS4 Pro.

Unsurprisingly, the new Project Scorpio console will not be going back to the power-brick design of yore, and will instead mimic the Xbox One S’ internal power supply.

While this might not come as much surprise to fans, more was also revealed about the Scorpio’s potential 4K abilities.

“In Microsoft's efforts to make Project Scorpio a true 4K system, it will also feature HEVC and VP9 codecs for decoding 4K streams for things such Netflix, just like the Xbox One S,” Windows Central explains.

“It will also leverage HEVC for encoding 2160p, 60 frame-per-second (FPS) video for Game DVR and streaming.

“Microsoft's Beam streaming service has been running public 4K stream tests for some time, and it's now fair to assume it will not only be PC streamers who will benefit.

“Project Scorpio's Game DVR will allow you to stream and record clips in 4K resolution with 60FPS, according to our sources, which is a massive, massive step up from the 720p, 30FPS you get on the current Xbox One.”

The ability to offer 4K 60fps video game capture would give the Xbox Scorpio a huge advantage over the PS4 Pro, which can offer 1080p and 60fps.

It appears that not only will the Xbox Scorpio look to offer native 4K gaming but will also provide 4K console features too.

That could mean everything from Game DVR support, streaming apps and Blu-Ray functionality.

That's good to hear from microsoft as i had a little problem when the first announced that the scorpio will have a new library. kinda explains more about the games we will see also if the current xbox one can handle them i'm guessing the Settings in game with these games will be alot like PC so you can choose more options. nice work from microsoft.
