22% of Overwatch players on PC use integrated GPUs

4.2
Blizzard games are traditionally known to run well on most machines, and Overwatch is no exception. In fact, the game was designed from the get go to perform well even when running on the lowest end of GPUs and integrated chips.

This tactic paid off, because according to Blizzard, 22% of the game’s player base on PC uses integrated GPUs. These graphics cards are typical of notebooks and ultrabooks, and definitely aren’t strong enough in a lot of cases to even meet the minimum requirements of today’s big games.

Ryan Greene, Blizzard senior software engineer confirmed this tidbit during a GDC 2017 talk, as reported by PCGamer.

The goal, according to Greene, was to have Overwatch get at least 60fps using the recommended specs, and at least 30fps using the minimum specs. Blizzard achieved this by getting the engineering team “excited about minspec.”

“Not everybody was excited at first, but as we got going on it, people really felt the value in it,” said Greene. “We set up playtest labs with various machines all configured with different hardware. We got different people to play on it, and they were surprised at how well it ran, and how much it felt like Overwatch.”

This approach ended up also benefiting those running high-end specs, not to mention consoles.

You can test it out yourself the next time you log on. While the game doesn’t look amazing on low settings, it holds up surprisingly well in the areas where it counts most.

These comments were a bit unexpected. I've only recently been able to build myself a nice pc. I don't blame others for not being as fortunate as me.

ZTG I honestly do not believe this, who games without a GPU :O

People who don't know any better and play on their mom's laptop and call themselves gamers.

I feel bad for anyone who has to game on iGPUs :(

So if you dont use a GPU then you're not considered a gamer? Thats pretty ignorant to say dont you think?

I know 3 guys that play all on laptops. They cannot afford to build desktops plus using a laptop is easier for their line of work.

No, I wasn't talking about people who are less fortunate to afford a decent rig. I was talking about the wannabe gamers that play mainstream games on the family computer. Or the ones that play mobile games like candy crush and farmville.

If you don't use a dedicated GPU you are severely hindering yourself, when it comes to hardware demanding games. If you get less that 30 fps is the game really that enjoyable? Or if it looks like a slideshow nintendo 64 game?

You can get a used desktop with an i3 & 750ti for ~$200 and most games to date will be playable on low-med graphics (higher if you lower resolution and disable AA and Post processing effects) @ 30fps.

I snagged a dell with a 960m and i7-6700HQ for $499 (my traveling rig.) Thats how much the xbox and ps4 cost at release.

its like calling yourself a gamer is something not every one should do. If your an avid gamer but you game on your phone your still a gamer. If you only play flashg ames your still a gamer. Its not like being a gamer is some secret club or some shit.

That's pretty sweet that they put this in to factor when designing the game.

Always wondered where the overwatch forum was. Really liked this game but couldn't handle the 15 game losing streaks becuse of teammates.
