Rocket League Hits 10.5 Million Sales, 29 Million Players; No Sequel Coming

4.6
Psyonix has announced that Rocket League has hit a new sales milestone, surpassing 10.5 million copies sold. Additionally, the total number of players has now reached 29 million (this number includes split-screen players and players who got a free copy of the game via PlayStation Plus).

The news comes via Pysonix VP Jeremy Dunham who told Colin Moriarty of Kinda Funny Games (relayed by GameSpot) that around a fourth of the 29 million registered players (roughly 7 million) played Rocket League sometime in February, which shows the game still possesses a thriving community more than year and a half after launch. According to Dunham, the game’s playerbase continues to grow, which is a big reason why Psyonix isn’t planning on making a sequel anytime soon, despite there potentially being a strong financial incentive to do so.

Dunham tells Kinda Funny Games the following:

“Why would we want to take this huge community that we’ve already built, that’s still growing, and say, ‘What you’re playing now is going to be irrelevant in 12 months, but we want you to stop what you’re doing, giving us money all over again, and move over to this other game,'” Dunham explained. “That’s not the right way to do things. I think that era of games has passed.”

“Our goal was to keep making Rocket League better and better so that we don’t lose any of the people that want to play. If they’re playing our game, we’re not going to penalize them and make them buy our game again just because we want to add a couple new features. We want to let them know we’re in it for the long haul, if they’re in it for the long haul.”

To put it into perspective of how far out of mind a sequel is for Psyonix, Dunham revealed that the team is thinking up new features for the game that are or two years away from release.

Dunham also revealed that Psyonix is regularly approached by publishers about forming partnerships, however, with an influx of resources from Rocket League, the developer doesn’t feel that its needs to partner with outside companies as much as it used to.

maDz Rocket League is the sequel to Super Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars. There is no need for a sequel for an amazing game like this.

Would you recommend buying it?

I personally don't see the need for a sequel, at least not for many years. They can just add updates, the game is always going to be the same they should just keep up with fresh updates.
