Xbox Head details Project Scorpio pricing; Says it is a "premium" console

4.6
We have a couple more months to go before we get a full reveal of Microsoft's upcoming console, codenamed Project Scorpio, but Xbox Head Phil Spencer has detailed a bit of what the console will be like in a recent interview.

Prior to his interview, we knew that Scorpio would have something similar to the average console price point and that it will be packing some power. According to Spencer, during an hour-long interview with IGN Scorpio will be more expensive than an Xbox One S and will be for the "premium" customer, similar to what the Elite series is.

"I call it a premium console because I want people to be clear that the customer we're building that for is the premium gaming customer," said Spencer. "The person who buys the majority of the games, the person who's playing the most games, spending the most hours, spending the most dollars. It's like our Elite controller. I call that a premium controller.

"I'm not trying to scare anybody on the price. We're going to come out on a price that we think is fair for the product that we build and the customers will tell us as they always do. I call it premium because I don't want people to get confused that somehow Scorpio is the thing that is going to take over the Xbox line."

While Spencer didn't outright say the price, he did hint that Scorpio would hold a higher price point than the Xbox One S. The hint came when Spencer detailed that the Xbox One S would remain the top seller, even over Scorpio.

"The majority of the consoles that we're going to sell are the Xbox One S and I'm very proud of that," he said.

Eternity I'd expect a $500 price tag on this. Not too much higher than $600 if they want to sell it fairly well. I bought my Day One Xbox One for the same price. But now that the Scorpio is coming out, Im going to keep a close eye on it.

If what they show us convinces me, I'll drop the money for it. If not, then I'll just keep waiting for the next one!

its a premium console, why would it be the same price as the xbox one was on release? it will likely be closer to the $800-$1000 range. Your not gonna get a 4k capable console for less than $600 unless the textures are all low quality and running at 30fps.

Lol no? If it was that expensive then it wouldn't sell period. PS4 Pro is almost the same in terms of power and it's launch cost is $399. For $800-1000 you can buy a PC capable of real 4k.

ps4 pro is 2/3's the expected power of the xbox scorpio. It can't even run decent looking games in native 4k. The scorpio is meant to. I would be seriously surprised if the console is below 699 on launch. I expect the model with the most HDD/SSD will cost closer to $950.
He wouldn't call it a premium console if it cost the same as the xbox one on launch. it will cost more than the ps4 pro as well since it's considerably more powerful.

I'm going to be honest here I will still buy it even if I think it's overpriced

They won't take it over £500 because there's no way they'd expect people to spend that much on a console when you can probably spend less and get better specifications on a gaming PC if you build it yourself

The same people saying it's gonna be overpriced are th same wavy hype kids that pay $300 for a white tee that says supreme.

I don't even think any of the specifications are confirmed yet. Pretty sure the GPU is the only thing they've announced. Everything is speculation until they announce what it will have, and from that point we can form an opinion on whether or not they are charging too much for what it has.

Honestly though, most people who have money to burn like myself will get this console irrelevant to it's specifications.

Aslong as its not stupidly priced which it wont be im going to get it, I play games everyday and enjoy gaming so yeah i dont mind spending a bit of cash on it. Anyone complaining saying it will be over priced and ridiculous this clearly isnt a console aimed for your demographic

Rigged What they mean by this is that it's gonna be wayyyy over-priced

Nope, £500 max, it's just obvious.

Mr_Robot "premium" console. lol that just means that they are about to charge a crazy amount for it

Watch the Q&A on IGN and you will see that is false.
