Microsoft is upending this year’s E3 schedule by pushing its conference forward to a Sunday, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer has revealed why: Microsoft just wanted to be first.

“I liked opening E3, and I felt when we weren’t opening E3 we were… just in the middle,” Spencer told IGN. “The other platform holders were right behind us, and I felt like, ‘okay well if we’re not getting the benefit of opening E3, we’re not closing…’ It unshackled us to kind of try to go do something else. So we’re gonna try it, we’ll learn.”

Spencer added that it’s important for Microsoft to go first in order to “not end up in the middle of everybody else’s news.”

“Going on Sunday I think will allow us to tell our story, and it will sit there a little more as opposed to everybody else just instantly following up with their own briefings,” Spencer explained.

Microsoft hasn’t explicitly said what will be on show at this year’s E3, but some “big news” has been heavily hinted at. It’s likely we’ll see a reveal of the new Xbox One console upgrade, currently codenamed Project Scorpio.
