Why Halo Wars 2 doesn’t feature cross-platform multiplayer

4.6
Halo Wars 2 won’t feature cross-platform play between the Xbox One and Windows PCs, according to Xbox head Phil Spencer.

While Spencer was optimistic about expanding the cross-play feature in future games, long-standing “engine reasons” prevent Halo Wars 2 from joining the list.

So far, only a few games have been cross-play compatible. Gears of War 4 received a special cross-play playlist in an update last week, and Forza Horizons 3 and a few indie titles make up most of the rest of the list. In the future, though, Microsoft aims to enable cross-play for both Crackdown 3 and Gwent.

While full cross-play isn’t possible for Halo Wars 2, Microsoft is working towards bringing the console and PC experiences closer together. According to another statement of Spencer’s, Halo Wars 2 could be the game that finally brings full keyboard and mouse support to the Xbox One.

Halo Wars 2 releases on February 21st for the Xbox One and PC.
