Phil Spencer Does Not Want to Release a New Xbox Every Two Years

4.6
With the Xbox One S out, the PlayStation 4 Pro to release this month, and Project Scorpio slated for launch next year, one can only wonder how fast the next batch of hardware will come around.

The upgraded consoles follow slightly the methods of PC hardware, where gamers continually upgrade their rigs to receive the best-possible performances from games. Project Scorpio — as of now at least — won’t have any exclusives, but it’ll run Xbox One games at the highest resolutions and framerates.

However, in an interview with Game Informer, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said releasing a new console every couple years is “not part of the console business model.”

“I don’t have this desire to every two years have a new console on the shelf; that’s not part of the console business model, and it doesn’t actually help us. The best customer I have is somebody who buys the original Xbox and just buys all the games. That’s the best customer for us in terms of the pure financials of it. I don’t have a need to get you to go buy the newest console, or I don’t have the need to create an artificial loop of, ‘Here’s a new console every two years,’ in order to get you to go buy.

“I’m not trying to turn consoles into the graphics card market where every so often Nvidia or AMD come out with a new card, and if I want a little bit more performance I’m going to go buy that new card. I think for consoles it’s different. I think you have to hit a spec that actually means something in an ecosystem of televisions and games.”

Spencer said he doesn’t know what’s next after Scorpio.
“We’re thinking about it. We’re looking at consumer trends and what the right performance spec and price would be, and [asking ourselves], ‘Can we hit something that has a meaningful performance characteristic that a gamer would care about?'”

Project Scorpio will launch during Holiday 2017. The hardware is claimed to be “the most powerful console ever made.” At this time no price has been revealed.

Tele All they want is money, no point bringing out consoles every couple of years.

Well you can't be successful if you don't make money. No one forces you to buy the new model either.

Well that's upto him I don't buy a new console every 2 years anyway I like to get the most out of a console before I get a new one so this doesn't really bother me.

KyloCrux Good, I want to be able to enjoy my console and not have to worry about a new one every other year. It is quite annoying.

I feel ya but then again the current cycle is already nearly 4 years old. I'm worried about the price point of something being so heavily promised by microsoft because at the rate they're going, it's going to be more expense then buying a prebuilt gaming PC.

I'm going to still have my Original xbox one. No matter how many different Xbox one consoles come out.

BigBrotherIsWatching I don't want one every 2 years either I think we should at least get 4-8 years out of them.

Right, the Scorpio seems like such a great console that it should last me a good 10 years.

Got there before me haha ;)
