Is your keyboard language set to the United States?
You can check by following these steps (Windows 10). Go to Settings. In the UK and most of Europe the @ symbol is usually in the middle row and two along from the enter key. |

Lucritius wrote Huh, I never knew the UK layout was different than the US. There are not so many differences, just a few small ones. (But when you are used to one format, using the other can be quite annoying!)
The extra key is added next to the Enter key to accommodate # and ~. The Alt key to the right of the space bar is replaced by an AltGr key. The £ takes the place vacated by the # on the 3 key. (Euro sign () is produced by AltGr+4 and is shown as a secondary symbol). @ and " are swapped. The \ key is moved to the left of the Z key ( Shift+\ still produces |). The Enter key spans two rows, and is narrower to accommodate the #/~ key. We have a few extra secondary characters for speakers of Gaelic and Welsh. Most UK keyboards do not label Backspace, Enter, Tab and Shift in words. Here is an image of how the keyboards differ: |
