When i do a speed test, my download is in the ball park of 500mbs-700mbs depending on time of day. but when i download a game on my pc, the same one i did the speed test from, my download speed caps at about 20mbs. any reason why?

Are you on PC or console? Generally, downloading games through a launcher or dedicated servers have their own cap rate and you will almost never get the download speeds your network is rated for, unfortunately

Typically games are downloaded in MBs, not Mbps. Also are you hard wired in or wifi?

Windows 10 and 11 have a lovely feature on restricting bandwidth usage.

"Start - Edit Group Policy"

Navigate to:
"Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > QS Packet Scheduler", and double-click the "Limit reservable bandwidth" option on the right pane.

80 Should be Default, Set to 0/10% and reboot.

**Additional if required**
Optimizer
Download, install and open--, (In application) Slide speed to 100+,* "optional" settings may improve things too* and apply

Be sure all other potential limits are lifted, Hardware capable of 100/1000 Mbps Speeds (1/2.5GB Lan)

Also Test WIFI and Lan speeds, disabling the one your not testing for accurate results and try both on speed.

Usually your DL speed is capped to avoid consuming all the bandwidth of your network with one device.

1. Megabyte, and Megabit are not the same thing. There is a difference.
2. Wired, or wifi?
3. What even is your ISP's speed SUPPOSED to be? 500-700 is pretty odd to be jumping that much.
4. Depending on what service you're dealing with, you may be capped at a certain speed. Steam is notorious for it, but there is a way to undo it. Good luck with googling it, did it years ago cannot remember.
5. Wired is always better than wireless.

*6. Not sure how your ISP is, but if you've noticed serious instability with your internet speeds, have them redo the coax cables top to bottom (may come at additional charges to you).

to really dumb this down

200mbps is 20MB/s. Those speeds are rarely guaranteed 24/7 unless cached downloading. However you can usually expect at least an 85% match on most download servers.

Another solution might be to use a better ethernet cable. I use a Cat 8 ethernet cable which allows me to send and receive more packets. The Cat 8 might be overkill but any gold plated conducting cable will insure you have a more solid connection than a standard ethernet cable.

OP hasn't responded but I gotta clear this topic up. I can't be having mis-information floating around.

Probably region and server limited more like. I can fully utilise my download speed on all launchers if I remove the limit should there be one in the launcher. GB internet via Ethernet

Spot on. Most useful post here.

Runts is out here just boosting posts

The guy mentioning Group Policy... please stop. It's what we call knowing a little too much to be dangerous but not enough to be helpful. On the right track so to say, but for home users, this will be done via the registry. Also, if you're requiring an additional bit of software to help you "download faster", you're doing it wrong. The advice is basically useless, if I'm correct in reading, because it relies on working on a VLAN'd network which I'm sure the OP certainly isn't.

Tarkov wrote Usually your DL speed is capped to avoid consuming all the bandwidth of your network with one device.
Depending on the launcher. You can go into the setting of said launcher to remove this. Not wrong, just expanded your answer

Eh... Nah. Not buying that. CAT 5E is rated for 2.5Gb/s which is, currently, more than enough for home use. Only benefit for any higher cat cable is for use when you have severe interference issues / running long distance (ish) / outdoor environments.

Should OP see this, reply with some screenshots of speed test information & more information with the specific issue you're having.
