Hey.
My PC broke and needs to be replaced but I am not computer savvy enough to know whether or not I should replace my GPU or alternatively build around it.

The model I have is a "MSI GeForce GTX 1060 AERO ITX 6G OC 6144MB".

Essentially is this GPU still considered usable or is it either already or soon to be so outdated that I should just replace it?

I'll be answering the pinned guidelines with bulletpoints:

- When it comes to budget it depends whether or not I'll be replacing this component or not.
For now lets say the budget is 5k euros. edit: to be clear while my budget is high, I want to stress I'm not planning on building some monster PC.

- I use my pc for browsing, illustrating as a hobby and casual gaming. Warframe, Outward, and the Witcher III are my most recently played games. I use software like Paint Tool Sai and Drawpile for illustrations. I occasionally stream games and videos to my friends, but the hardware won't be used for professional streaming or the like.

- I use a cheap monitor. Nothing fancy.

- Not considering peripherals at the moment.

- I do not need an OS. I use W7, but considering all most likely will have to use W10 from
now on.

- I won't be overclocking

- Link to the GPU model info: [Minimum post requirement for links]

Any advice, suggestions, and thoughts are appreciated.

My dude your budget is 5K euros you can build a monster for that price.

Definitely start from scratch and get a new GPU, you can build a beast of a system for about 3k anything beyond that is just flashy

A 3080 is like $700usd ish and that other than a CPU is your most expensive component

Thank you for your input. I probably won't end up putting even 3k into this, just put the 5k up there so that I could get a wide range of suggestions and because I didn't really know the price range for these sorts of builds.

I know the simplest route would be to get a new GPU, but the old GPU still works. I just don't know how long the model will be a viable option.

There is no set price range. Your budget is your budget. We can't tell you how much money you're comfortable spending. If you're going to drop 5k on a system, we can absolutely help with suggestions. However, if you're never going to spend anywhere near 5k, then it would just be a waste of our time, as well as yours.

Does it perform how you want it to? If yes, then it's still "viable". If not, then it might be time to consider upgrading it if you want/can.

So what exactly are you looking for? Do you need a parts list for a full system?

If so, what is your location? Euros covers a lot of countries. If you're in Germany for example, then different parts would make sense than if you were in Ireland.
As well as this, we'll need an actual budget to work with. How much have you got that you're comfortable spending on this system?

What are all the parts that you can/will re-use? The GTX 1060 of course, but what about storage, case, etc?

If you don't need a monitor, what monitor(s) are you using with this system?

Well 5k was a number I came up with as "an absolute max" I'd be willing to spend, with gritted teeth. 3k sounds more reasonable, so based on what's been said here I guess I'd prefer to go for a build that's around 1.5-3k. As a side note, in the case that I decide to replace my current GPU I might just buy a ready made PC instead of building it myself.

Currently I am trying to find out whether my current GPU is worth keeping. It is proving to be difficult question to ask since my knowledge of the subject is rather limited and the apparent subjective nature of the beast. I apologize for that and if you feel that your time is being wasted.

To answer your other questions my location is Finland, and I do not intend to reuse any other part from my old PC. All other components are more than ten years old. It is surprising even to me how long it kept up with modern machines to this day... Or the day before yesterday technically. The monitor I have is a rather cheap Samsung tv. I don't have the model number at hand for that one.

Whether or not it is "worth" keeping, is really up to you. Is it still usable? Absolutely, it's far from obsolete.
However, if you're spending 1500+ euros, it wouldn't really make much sense(if any) to put a 6GB GTX 1060 in a system of that caliber.

wend1g wrote I apologize for that and if you feel that your time is being wasted.

Nah, I worded that pretty poorly, sorry. I just mean that if someone were to recommend you a 5k euro system, it would be entirely pointless, since you're not happy spending that much money anyway. We're happy to help though. I'd just rather help you get something you'll be happy with, rather than you feel like you're overspending.

wend1g wrote The monitor I have is a rather cheap Samsung tv.

In that case, I'd definitely recommend a new monitor. With a new monitor, a GPU upgrade will also make more sense.
Alternatively, build yourself a cheap system and re-use your GPU+monitor if you feel that they are both still sufficient for your use case.

If you're spending somewhere in the region of 1500 euros, I'd be looking at something like this;
PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor (214.90 @ Jimm's)
Motherboard: Asus PRIME B550-PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard (154.90 @ Jimm's)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory (86.00 @ Jimm's)
Storage: ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive (142.90 @ Jimm's)
Video Card: Zotac GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB GAMING Twin Edge Video Card (569.00 @ Jimm's)
Case: Phanteks Eclipse P400A ATX Mid Tower Case (64.90 @ Jimm's)
Power Supply: BitFenix Whisper M 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (91.90 @ Jimm's)
Monitor: AOC Q27G2U/BK 27.0" 2560x1440 144 Hz Monitor (339.00 @ Jimm's)
Total: 1663.50

1440p144Hz monitor included, and a GPU more than capable of running @ 1440p144Hz. This is a substantial upgrade over your current monitor+GPU.
Although, if you're not doing much gaming, it would probably make more sense to grab a 4k60Hz monitor than 1440p144Hz, to be honest. You'll get a nice 4k monitor for 350-400 euros easily.

I would also, personally, up the RAM from 16GB to 32GB in this system to be honest, but 16GB should suffice.

Or, on the other hand, you could just spend 600ish euros on something like this;
PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor (149.00 @ Jimm's)
Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard (109.90 @ Jimm's)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory (86.00 @ Jimm's)
Storage: Intel 665p 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive (119.90 @ Jimm's)
Case: Phanteks Eclipse P400A ATX Mid Tower Case (64.90 @ Jimm's)
Power Supply: BitFenix Whisper M 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (91.90 @ Jimm's)
Total: 621.60

Re-use your current monitor and GTX 1060 with this.

Still a perfectly nice system. Very slight downgrade on mobo and SSD, but it's unlikely to make any noticeable difference for you anyway. Dropped R5 3600 to a 2600x, but if you're re-using a GTX 1060 and cheap 720p, or even 1080p monitor, then you won't notice any difference between a 2600x and 3600 anyway, so might as well save the 60-70 euros IMO.

With either of these parts lists, you'll want to add whatever capacity 7200RPM HDD you want/need. I wouldn't bother with anything smaller than a 2TB HDD, but that might not be enough for you. Or, if the 1TB SSD is going to be enough to last you a while, it's not hard at all to add additional storage in the future, so you could just not bother with an HDD. Only you really know how much storage capacity you will require though.

You also might want to grab an additional case fan to use as exhaust in the rear of the case. The P400A will come with 2 included case fans in the front as intake. Though, you could get away with just 2 case fans(especially if you re-use your 1060), but I'd move one of the fansto the rear of the case so you have some intake+exhaust
You could spend the extra 30 euros for the RGB variant of the P400A;
fi.pcpartpicker.com/product/QdXYc...400atg_dbk
This comes with 3 fans instead of 2(and they're RGB, obviously lol). Although, with them being RGB fans, you'll likely want to keep all 3 in the front, so you'd still probably want to add an additional case fan in the rear as exhaust.
