I have had this issue when recovering accounts on my console, as FawhsMods stated, pressing the guide button straight away should work.

Ooh - thanks for that, I'll get him to do that next time.
That is one of the (many) annoying things about it:
having to enter the sign in details every time he tries, because it doesn't appear that there is any way of ticking the "remember me" box as it is then busy trying to download the profile (I guess that's what it is doing).

Try to sign into the account and when you see the "account name" signed in message at the bottom of your screen press the guide button straight away to bypass the remember me part.

PM me if you have any other issues.

Thanks also for that Ryan - I'll get him to have a go next time.
I'm not exactly an XBox expert - I'd never even physically touched one before last week!
My nephew is the XBox expert having used one for years, but he's not very technical when things go wrong.
I'm very technically-minded and love problem-solving, but my expertise is with programming for Windows.

Thanks to all those offering suggestions and tips:
I loaded a few utilities and my Acronis backup software onto a USB drive, intending to either copy the entire HDD sector by sector or copy the FATX file system to a backup when I went round to their house with my external SATA --> USB3 adapters.
However - after speaking on the phone and suggesting the "press X as soon as the sign in message appears" (he has to be quick, another half a second and it doesn't work) and that worked - he gets fully signed in and can play whatever games he likes again!
It doesn't actually tick the "remember me" box unfortunately, so he has to enter all of his details to sign in again next time.
But he is now really happy that he can use it again - but doesn't want me to go and mess with it in case he loses anything (a bit panicky about that).

So thanks again everyone

Good to hear man! The timing is weird for the bypass method sometimes it doesn't work also the remember me bug is a server issue and not a console issue so doing anything to the console would probably not help fix it.

Yep that's very good, thanks for your assistance.
I work with Windows PCs and servers all of the time - they also can be very annoying when things work fine for months, then all of a sudden one day something stops working even though you haven't changed anything!
I used to work with an AS/400 system - now that was pretty much perfect - in the 10 or so years I worked on it there was never a single crash or operating system freeze.
