From what ive seen (because some friends change their name's)

For example, lets say your main GT is Jumping and you change it to jump#3391, you'll be known as jump#3391 in parties but in game you'll be shown as "Jumping" Unless Your first name when you first create a xbox account will be "Jump3391" in any game you play until they add a system in the later future.

No if you change it from jumping, it'll be gone. You can't have 2 gamer tags. If you change it to jump#3391 you won't have "Jumping" unless you have that as your CoD modern warfare name?

I've heard that is varies from game to game. Basically developers have to enable or change something for just your name to be shown without numbers.
I really wish there was a full on Q/A page about this, seems to be various different opinions and ideas flowing around. Xbox may have made a mistake by not explaining this huge change to their system in detail.

I have asked the support about claiming a specific suffix and their response was this.

So I reviewed our resource, and upon trying to claim a gamertag on our end, we are able to confirm that the CUSTOMIZE option on the gamertag change page, will only be available once we use the one-time free gamertag change using social.xbox.com/changegamertag.


If anyone that has already used the free change could check that they have the option it would be great.

The page is kind of conflicting to what the support members are saying.

The FAQ says "The original GT will never be assigned a suffix" but the Xbox support members are saying "Every GT will be assigned a suffix when the update is fully rolled out".

And, it says the the suffix will appear everywhere but the friends list, but I just tested two games, my suffix did not appear on Apex legends but it DID appear on Battlefield V.

I'm sure there's going to be growing pains as this rolls out but these are the issues I've definitely noticed so far.

It's safe to say support members aren't always correct. Half the time they may not even know what you're truly asking.
For sure: the original tag will never get a suffix. I have my 3 letter and if I keep it I will never get numbers added. The way they defend this is by bringing up someone like Major Nelson. Anyone can make their tag major Nelson now, but only the real one will have no numbers. Various times in the FAQ(which is more trustworthy for the time being) they said if you don't change your tag and want the original, you don't get a suffix.
YOU HAD IT FIRST.

The whole showing up in games thing, I agree, seems to be out of sorts. Various different thing being said but I'm going to continue to assume that it will, at least eventually, be a developer choice... at least I hope. If they end up making it numbers always showing in all games then this will be a huge disappointment.
