My friend is wanting to build a desktop for gaming. He currently uses a laptop and wants a desktop. He is looking to spend $1,200. Doesn't need a mouse, Keyboard, Monitor, or windows. All he needs is the parts. He wants to be able to play games like R6 and similar games on High to Ultra. If someone could please put a PCPartPicker together for him or leave comments it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

He wants to use this case also https://www.amazon.com/Raidmax-GAMA-Gaming-Case-Orange/dp/B07BVZKHRF/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=orange+computer+case&qid=1557969048&s=gateway&sr=8-5

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 7 2700 3.2 GHz 8-Core Processor ($214.89 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! - Dark Rock 4 CPU Cooler ($74.90 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI - B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard ($109.89 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($79.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital - Blue 500 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ($64.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Gigabyte - GeForce RTX 2070 8 GB WINDFORCE Video Card ($478.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: EVGA - SuperNOVA G3 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($59.89 @ OutletPC)
Custom: Raidmax GAMA PC ($59.99)

Total: $1143.43

The Ryzen 7 2700 is not overclockable but it comes with a cooler so the be quiet cooler isn't necessary but I recommend it. If you want an overclockable CPU and you don't mind spending a bit more money, go with the Ryzen 7 2700X. This CPU does not come with a cooler so you would need the be quiet cooler. Also, the Raidmax looks of low quality for the price and its cheaper on Newegg at $50 which is more reasonable. The NZXT H500 are great cases but you pay a bit more.

The R7 2700 can absolutely be overclocked. All Ryzen CPUs are unlocked for overclocking. The R7 2700x does come with a stock cooler, the Wraith Prism. The R5 2600x and R7 2700 come with the lower end Wraith Spire cooler, and then R5 2600 comes with the lowest end Wraith Spire. It was first generation Ryzen "x" variant CPUs that did not come with an included cooler, like the 1700x and 1800x.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor ($149.89 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Scythe - FUMA Rev.B 79 CFM CPU Cooler ($46.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI - B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard ($109.99 @ B&H)
Memory: Team - Vulcan 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($72.89 @ OutletPC)
Storage: Intel - 660p Series 1 TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ($109.89 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI - GeForce RTX 2070 8 GB Video Card ($489.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Cooler Master - MasterBox NR600 (w/o ODD) ATX Mid Tower Case ($69.99 @ Amazon)
Power Supply: Cooler Master - MWE Gold 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply ($69.90 @ Amazon)
Total: $1119.53

You could switch to an i5-9600k and Z390 motherboard for an extra $100-150, but I'd personally rather stick with Ryzen. The i5-9600k could help you maintain higher FPS in some games though since you'll be playing at 1080p. The R5 2600 has a better upgrade path IMO, but that might not mean anything to you. I definitely would not be getting that Raidmax case btw, it's like the same price as a Phanteks Eclipse P350x which is a far better case.

Yes thank you for clarifying. The way I was taught makes me think that non X Ryzen series chips aren't really made for overclocking but apparently it is.
