My current PC is crapping out. It's old and cant handle games well anymore and the power supply fan slowed down to a crawl today, just today it started to smell like an electrical fire when I was playing War Thunder.

So I think I'm going to upgrade.... on a budget for now. I wanted to wait on a PC build until Bathesda's Starfield came out but my current PC will be in smoldering ruins by then.

So what I am thinking I want to do is build a new PC and go with high end parts where it makes sense and get cheap parts that I will replace in a hopefully under 2 years.

There's so many dang options it gets my head spinning but I figure I should get a high end motherboard and power supply and go cheap on CPU, graphics and RAM for now.

I will be recycling my current case, SSD and most likely my Cooler Master liquid CPU cooler.

So what kind of parts list would you guys put together for an idea like this???

I'm just looking to game at 1080p on War Thunder, Skyrim and Fallout 4. But once a game that gets me excited gets released I am thinking RTX 2080, $600-$1000 monitor, high end CPU that makes sense and water cooling galore.

Here's some parts I think will do what I'm looking for, but I know very little of what I'm looking at here.

AMD - Ryzen 5 1400 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor..... Asus - Prime X470-Pro ATX AM4 Motherboard...... G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory..... Corsair - VS 650 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply ..... Refurbished GTX 1070.

I already have an ATX case that should work, SSD and hard drive.

How does that parts list look for future upgading??? In the future I can add more DDR4, M.2 SSD, GTX 2080 Ti and a better Ryzen CPU.......?

Here's the PC parts picker full list except the Cooler Master Centurion 530 mid tower case I plan on using.

Most likely a poor idea. Just decide a reasonable budget for yourself, and build a system that makes sense with the money you have.

Definitely not. You don't want to cheap out on a motherboard or PSU, but it doesn't make any sense to sacrifice CPU and/or GPU performance for a higher end motherboard or PSU.

RockKnocker wrote Corsair - VS 650 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply

That's not a high end PSU. Pls do not buy any Corsair VS series PSU.

RockKnocker wrote Refurbished GTX 1070.

How much is it? Might be a good deal, might not. If it's the same price as a brand new GTX 1660Ti, I'd be getting the 1660Ti instead.

Wrong link, you need to copy the link just above the parts list on PCPP, not the URL.

What HDD and SSD do you have?
What specific Cooler Master AIO do you have? Most of the older ones aren't going to have an AM4 mounting kit so you'll need to get one to use the cooler with a Ryzen CPU. If it's a lower end 120mm AIO, then it might not even be worth re-using. If it's a couple of years old, then I probably wouldn't bother re-using it at all.

What monitor(s) are you using with the system?
What is your budget and currency?

Thanks for taking some interest in helping out.

Hopefully this is the correct parts picker list. pcpartpicker.com/list/78kWFt That should include my current AIO and SSD with the parts I was thinking of upgrading.

I am using a cheap AOC 22" 1080p monitor right now.

Good point about the GTX 1660, I hadnt looked into those. The refurbished 1070s I found were $230.

I'm burning the good ole' American dollar and my budget isn't really set to anything. If Elder Scrolls 6 was released yesterday I would say my budget is $3000-$4000 but that's just not the case.

I need to upgrade my current computer but right now I'm just looking at gaming at 1080p and happy with 50+fps. War Thunder, Skyrim and Fallout 4 are the most taxing games I am playing now, if I can get some smooth game play with those at 1080 I am happy.

BUT what is really twisting my tits is that I do want a $3000-$4000 computer and monitor ONCE Starfield or Elder Scrolls 6 is released, maybe if Red Dead Redemption 2 gets released for PC. So, I might not be making the most sense but I am trying to stay on a budget right now so I am not buying components at their top dollar when I dont need those components. By the time Starfield is released RTX 2080 Ti may be down to $800 or a better card released by then....

I'm still hanging on to my older style motherboard. My cpu is fx 8350 which I have on a stable overclock and I have 16gb of ddr3 ram. I just upgraded my gpu to a rx 580 which has 8gb of memory, and I'm playing black ops 4 and gta 5 on max settings with an average of 70 FPS. It's a budget build, I've only spent around 400$ for everything, but it looks good and it runs everything I need. Think about what you want out of your new computer, no need in going into the extreme if you don't have to!

Thanks I hadnt looked into any AMD GPUs, that rx 580 seems pretty decent for the price and I was already thinking about sticking with my current motherboard and upgrading the CPU to fx 8350 and getting a few more GB of DDR3 RAM.

How many watt power supply do you have running that setup?

We need some sort of budget to work with. You said it yourself, you're not exactly interested in dropping $3k, so you've got a budget. The system you're looking at looks to be about $650, is that your budget?

Also, just realised what case you're planning on re-using- I wouldn't. That's an almost 15 year old case, just get something new. Even a cheapo $30-40 case would probably be a nice upgrade, but there are plenty of good options in the $60-80 price range for cases.

I would say $500 would be a good budget for now. Keep in mind I already have the Samsung SSD, 650 watt PSU and Cooler Master CPU cooler from that parts picker link.

I'm open to new cases also, I figured I would just put the new components in my current case until I do the full upgrade when some games I'm looking forward to are released.

So for around $500, I can go higher if it makes sense, I am looking for a motherboard that will work well with a 1000w or more PSU, high end RAM, high end CPU and RTX2080 Ti or what ever comes out after that. Plus minimal DDR4 RAM, mediocre GPU and CPU that will go on that motherboard for the next year or two.

I'm using a 650 watt, I upgraded from an fx 6300 to the fx 8350 and I purchased my rx 580 this week for 100$. I have no complaints out of my system thus far, it does everything I need it to. I play apex, black ops 4, and gta 5 all on highest settings. Also I got my case on amazon, it is 44$ if you decide to switch that up.
