I played on my friends set up and we both have the same 144hz monitor but his games seemed to be beyond smooth while mine seem to be lacking ig. I pre bought a IBP computer off amazon lol so some of the specs are

8gb of ram

i7-7700 cpu @3.60ghz

What is your budget and currency?
What exactly do you use your system for?
What exactly are you looking to achieve with an upgrade?
What are your full system specs, including the make and model of the PSU. Would also be handy to know what case you have, or if it's like an OEM case.

We still need a currency. We also can't recommend anything without a budget, since we don't know your financial situation.

What games?

What motherboard? Is it 2x4GB or 1x8GB RAM? If you download Speccy, you can post a screenshot of all your specs, apart from case/PSU.

Set your monitor to 144Hz first.

Then, add another 8GB RAM and an SSD. Then you can upgrade GPU if you want. Might need to upgrade your PSU before GPU, but again we don't know the make and model of your current PSU so I don't know.

You could also maybe add an aftermarket cooler if you're running the stock Intel cooler. Something like this would do nicely;
