I think it depends on what kind of games you play.

Competitive shooters? I'd rather get a high refresh rate than a higher resolution.

Are you all about the super-high graphics settings and fancy looking stuff on your RPG game? FPS won't really matter so much and I'd rather go for a 4K 60FPS benchmark.

Personally, I play a lot of fast-paced shooters so high refresh rates are essential for me which is why I game at 1440p 144Hz

I'd say it's only useful if you're playing on a MASSIVE monitor or a TV. I'd rather go with high refresh rates any day.

I have 3 monitors, all 1440p, 1ms response, IPS, and 144Hz. 2080 Ti, 8700k, 32GB of RAM, 6TB of SSDs, 1 being an m.2. All 3 though are 2TB.

Speaking from experience, 1440p really just is the end of quality. 4 looks great.... depending on the size of your monitor(s). But RUNNING a game in 1440p across all 3 monitors, is barely possible for me at the lowest settings unless it's something specifically made for that kind of cockpit I have, say Forza and Flight sim games. I'm not playing apex legends or ARMA on more than 1 monitor. Just not possible due to frame drops and the insane stretching the offset monitors get. It's pointless. But I have those monitors for streaming, monitoring, comms, etc. They're in 1440p at 144 because I wouldn't dare go back to 60 even if it's in 4k. Besides turning on EVERY graphic setting to it's max at 4k and then RTX features, will just tank frames. 1440p gives me perfect clarity, a nice resolution that allows me to reduce anti-aliasing nicely, and games in general look SO MUCH cleaner, sharper, and better in 1440p. 4k to me is too sharp, too bright, and too slow.

At the end of the day you will spend the exact same I have to to get this clarity in 1440p as you would in 4k but even more for a crap monitor. Sooo... If you have 6,000.00 bucks to drop.. Go for it, I did. All is up to you on what it is you like and want.

I use a 4K monitor and it's exactly the same as my friends HD monitor. In my opinion their isn't much of a difference it just costs a lot more

IMO, if you play games on a TV that you are sitting pretty far away from, then yes 4K is pointless because like LTT said, you can't discern any pixels on 1080p from that far.

A monitor, however, is a different story. 4K on a monitor that is sitting on a desk for a PC is understandable and more practical because when you are sitting that much closer to a screen, you are more likely to discern pixels at 1080p.

The biggest issue with 4K right now is that unless you are willing to pay $1000-$2000, getting smoother FPS quality on a 144hz monitor WITH 4K is non-existent and that is bad for competitive gamers where high frame rates can mean the difference between a win and a loss.

It doesn't matter at all, anyone that says it does has money to waste on a pointless venture. 1080p is fine, hell 1440 is epic, just no need for 4K at all imho.

1080p on a monitor is noticeably jagged compared to 4K. People want 4K because it compensates that and it's beautiful to look at for games with tons of texture detail.

Personally I was even fine with 720p until like 2 years ago, been 1080p ever since and I particularly enjoy it, I don't think I'd get much of a noticeable boost, and talk about diminished returns too, all that extra cash to shell out for not much of a noticeable difference, at least I don't notice it much, others may have a more refined sense of sight then I do lol
