My parents stopped trying to fix their laptop recently and they got a new one.

The laptop turns on, at least the power lights and stuff, but the screen stays black.

Is there anyway I can hook the laptop up to my monitor or something and view it there?
My mom has all the pictures from the last 25 years on there and I'm not sure how much she has backed up. I want to get everything back on the new one, what's a good route to take?

take it apart, grab the hard drive get a USB to sata adapter. Continue from there. The drive should allow ownership, if it doesn't there are still ways but let's start there.

You can hook it up to a monitor as long as the laptop has an output port for this like VGA,DP etc.

or you could just take it apart and grab out the HDD and either put it in the new one/in a pc/ get a SATA to USB adaptor and hook it up to a laptop or PC

Could I just hook it up via HDMI to my monitor and it would just show up? Or is there settings I would have to mess around with?

That would work providing it is just the screen that is the problem, of course that may not be the case but if it isnt going to cost you anything to try it then you may as well give it a go. and yeah it would just show up on the monitor like normal
