Synopsis
The game is set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where a preacher named Joseph Seed (portrayed by Greg Bryk) has risen to prominence. Seed believes that he has been chosen by God to protect the people of Hope County from an "inevitable collapse" and has established a congregation called the Project at Eden's Gate. Ostensibly, this is to fulfill his mission of leading the people to salvation; in reality, Seed is a radical preacher and Eden's Gate is a militaristic doomsday cult. Under his rule, Eden's Gate has used both coercion and violence to forcibly convert the residents of Hope County, and intimidation to keep them from contacting the outside world for help. Seed has assumed the title of "the Father" and maintains control over Hope County with the aid of the Heralds: Jacob, "the Soldier" (Mark Pellegrino), a former military officer and Joseph's older brother who oversees the training and deployment of the cult's armed soldiers; John, "the Baptist" (Seamus Dever), Joseph's younger brother and a lawyer who has been able to acquire much of the land in Hope County for Eden's Gate who leads the forcible conversion of residents; and Faith, "the Siren" (Jenessa Grant), an early member of the cult who rose up and acts as a pacifist to bring the people to trust in Joseph, but runs forced labour camps for residents who resist the cult.

The player takes on the role of a rookie sheriff's deputy--referred to as "the Deputy"--who is part of a task force sent to arrest Seed. The residents of Hope County opposed to Seed include a cast of characters who join the fight with motives ranging from altruism to revenge, profit and boredom.

Plot
You begin Far Cry 5 in a helicopter as the Junior Deputy of Hope County(commonly referred to as "Rook"), alongside Deputies Staci Pratt and Joey Hudson, Sheriff Earl Whitehorse, and U.S. Marshal Cameron Burke. You are on your way to take cult leader Joseph Seed in to custody because Burke has a warrant for his arrest and is determined to bring Seed to justice, despite warnings from the Sheriff that "sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone". Once you enter Joseph Seed's church, you are prompted to handcuff Joseph Seed who does not resist, but insists that God will not let him be detained. You arrest Joseph and walk him back to the helicopter before promptly being attacked by Peggies(members of the cult, "Project at Eden's Gate) and crashing. In the helicopter crash, Joseph Seed escapes, Deputy Hudson, Deputy Pratt, and Sheriff Whitehorse are captured while you and Marshal Burke flee the crash. You reach a cabin and try to escape in a truck but the Marshal crashes in to a River trying to evade cultists and is captured shoreside. Meanwhile, you are saved by Dutch.

When you wake up in Dutch's bunker, after some dialogue you are allowed to edit your character, a first for the Far Cry series. Not a huge amount of customisation, but still pretty cool. I went straight up 'Murica with camo trousers, a wife beater and obviously, mullet. After creating your character, you have to liberate Dutch's island as the tutorial, which involves destroying a few things, saving a couple of people and capturing a cult outpost.

Once you have done this, you unlock the map and can go on to play the game as you please. You are prompted to choose one of the 3 regions and Dutch suggests going to Fall's End first, which is in John's region, but you can explore as freely as you like. Your objective now is to complete missions, liberate outposts and destroy cult properties in each region until you liberate all 3. Each region is controlled by a different member of the Seed family; John Seed(Joseph's younger brother) controls Holland Valley, Faith Seed(adopted sister) controls Henbane River, and Jacob Seed(older brother) controls Whitetail Mountains. When you earn enough resistance points to liberate a region, you'll have to face off with the leader. You don't need to do everything in each region to start the boss fight, and you don't have to do the boss fight's in a certain order so play as you like.

After liberating all 3 regions and killing all of Joseph's family, you are able to confront Joseph Seed at his church, back where everything began. Here, after some dialogue you are prompted to either walk away or arrest Joseph. Both options will result in a different ending, neither of which I am going to ruin for any of you, but I will tell you that if you decide to arrest Joseph, the ending is wild!

Alternate ending
Like Far Cry 4 before it, Far Cry 5 also has an alternate ending. At the start of the game, when you are in Joseph's church with the Sheriff and Marshal, if you refuse to arrest Joseph, the Sheriff and yourself will turn to leave the church, leaving Joseph behind. The Marshal tries to stop you and insists that he "will have you all arrested" but the Sheriff pushes past and leaves the church, and the credits roll. Don't worry though, you'll still go on to play the game as usual after the credits roll.

Gameplay
Far Cry 5 consists of 3 game modes; Single player, co-op, and multiplayer.

Single player is the main game mode in which you play through the campaign missions as explained in the plot above, and several side missions. When not participating in missions, you are allowed to roam freely throughout the entire map, assuming you have completed the tutorial of course. Although, there are plenty of side missions, prepper stashes to find, civilians to be saved, and cult property to destroy along the way. You can still hunt animals in Far Cry 5, however you won't be needing animal skins to craft upgrades. Instead, Far Cry 5 uses only a perk system to unlock new weapon slots, more health, and other upgrades. You can earn perk points by completing missions, and finding prepper stashes. The best way to upgrade, in my opinion, is to aim for the more expensive perks you want first and then worry about finishing off cheaper or less relevant perks later.

Controls
The controls in Far Cry 5 are pretty similar to Far Cry 3 and 4. I've been using mostly stock key binds as it's all really convenient, and easy to get used to anyway. Switching between weapons is quick and easy, as is healing and crafting. Vehicles work and feel just like Far Cry 3 and 4 as well. Not the greatest driving system, but easy enough to get used to. Still, if you feel like it, there are plenty of options to change up the stock controls to your liking.

Graphics
Far Cry 5 uses the same old Dunia engine that we've been seeing for years, so the graphics are pretty much as you'd expect really. Nothing too breathtaking, but still pretty good. I've heard issues from some people playing on console that they're having some texture pop in issues occasionally, and even some people who've been having issues on PC but I've played through the entire game at (mostly) Ultra settings and seen nothing like that. I have however experienced a bug that has me stuck in night time, which is rather unfortunate. I didn't take screenshots throughout the progress of the story either, so when I went in to get some screenshots for this review, I couldn't get any during day time.. my bad!

Ubisoft recommend an i7-4770, or R5 1600 and GTX 970/R9 290X, but you can easily get away with an i3/R3 CPU and GPU's as low end as a GTX 760 or R9 270. I've been playing at (mostly) Ultra settings at 2560x1080 with a 4790k, 16GB RAM, and a GTX 970 and have barely dropped below 60FPS.

Here are a couple of screenshots from my game;

Rating
Plot : 9/10
Gameplay : 8.5/10
Controls : 9/10
Graphics : 8.5/10

Overall : 8.75/10

The night time bug I experienced resulted in a lowering of my score here. Other than that, just the fact that there's really nothing new or unexpected in the game is rather unfortunate, but the plot absolutely makes up for it in my opinion. Absolutely a great game to play, plenty of fun.

Very good review man, the graphics on this game look pretty damn good so it's got me excited for what we'll see in the next game. Cool that this game has a co op mode as well, that's a must. Good job dude.

Yeah, I'm not sure I care super much about the story in this game. I barely remember the story in Far Cry 3 aside from crazy bad guy taking control of islands or something and wanting you dead, and you want to get away or something... but I remember enjoying the experience of the gameplay! Yet again another brilliant review.
