Akame Ga Kill

I recently re-watched Akame ga Kill. I haven't seen this show since 2015, so it has been a bit. I remember I liked it when I first watched it. I thought that the above average amounts of violence and bloodshed was pretty bad***, and I still feel the same way. The fight scenes and ability of this anime to not feel bad about showing violence or killing off one of the characters makes for some pretty awesome action. The rest of my review is below this huge image lol.

Upon rewatching it this time, I have come to realize that probably my least favorite part of the show is that the violence gets a bit too excessive, and the character development suffers as a result. Don't get me wrong, I love this show, but it's definitely a weakness it has, IMO.

Tatsumi is kind of a stereotypical shounen type main character, in that he is naive, but overall a good guy, and becomes very strong through training and his beliefs. In addition, most of the female characters end up falling for him (I actually like this, but is pretty typical of a shounen haha). I feel that the dark setting and the way that the show kills off almost every character, ends up hurting character development. To me, the pacing felt fast, as before you know it, another MC would die. This seems obvious now that I type it out. Either way, I wish we got the chance for more character development. For example, I wish we got to see more of Chelsea. She seemed like she was gonna be a very cool character. I wanted to learn more about her, and see how her and Tatsumi's relationship would develop.

That being said, I really enjoyed this anime, probably more so the second time. I enjoyed the sense of humor that this show employed. Whenever the show felt like it was getting too dark, one of the characters would make a joke, which would lighten up the atmosphere, both in the show and for the viewer.

The excessive deaths and violence made this show very emotional too. Even though the characters were around only for a short time, I felt really sad when one would die, especially as they got to know Tatsumi. By the end of the last episode when Tatsumi breaks his promise and dies, someone had definitely put some onions near me or something .

For Tatsumi and Akame being the main characters, I wish they seemed "more important." By this I mean I wish it was a bigger deal when Tatsumi died and that we got to see more of Akame's backstory and personality. It seemed too casual to me when Tatsumi died. I wish it was even more emotional and a bigger deal. And I know we learn some of Akame's backstory, but for a character that really stood out to me, I wish we got to see more of her personality. I did enjoy the villains too. Some were kind of stereotypical, but hey, nothing wrong with that. My favorite villains were Wave, since he actually questions what he's doing, and Esdeath, because she's a freak and had some unique aspects lol.

I really enjoyed the animation of this show, especially in the fight scenes. I thought that was so cool. In addition, I liked the opening song quite a bit. Above all, there was a pretty sweet cast of characters (that I wish we got to see develop more), awesome fight scenes, and it was unique in the way MC's actually get killed, which makes for some emotionally scenes. It's sad to see people fall in love, fight for the right reason, and then die in front of the person they love. I wish they wouldn't have killed off so many of the characters, but then again, maybe this show wasn't up my alley if I'm complaining about that lol.

Favorite character: Akame
Least favorite character: Seryuu (goin' around preaching about justice, but being one of the most twisted characters on the show)

I would give this show a 7.5/10

I would love to know what you guys think about the show!

Wow, this took me a while to write! I didn't know I had this much to say about it. But yeah, this is all my own opinion, with the source being myself haha.

Tatsumi ga Kill! (oh wait yeah this show is about the demon girl with the sword)

I love Akame ga Kill, it's one of my all time favorites. It's a fun anime to watch as long as you don't think too hard about the plot. The characters were your typical run of the mill shounen characters with the added Game of Thrones 'anyone and everyone can die' twist that had me on the edge of my seat every episode. It has its short comings (diverting from the manga midway through the anime) and plot inconsistencies (e.g Beginning episode showing Tatsumi taking down a huge Danger Beast in one hit but later on barely being able to block Akame's attacks.) I'd love to see a prequel showcasing Akame's life as an assassin for the Empire and the moral struggles she went through. Hell I'd even like to see a spinoff anime that follows Kurome and what it was like for her when Akame defected from the Empire.

Overall its a solid 8/10 if you just want a fun anime to watch with some great action scenes and spooky demon girl-ness.
