So i have two monitors, 1 is 144hz which i use for gaming and the other one is an older monitor that is 60hz. The problem i keep having is that when i'm playing a game on my main monitor and watching an video or anything that uses a bit of processing power on my second monitor, my main monitor starts kinda to kinda lag atleast i notice that its not 144hz or something anymore. Whenever i close the thing on my second monitor it goes back to normal again.

Don't know if it matters but have a 1080ti and a i7-6700k at 4.5ghz so i dont think its my system. And also my main monitor has g-sync.

Anyone that has a solution for this problem?

I for the life of me don't know how I fixed this, but it's been an issue I've had since I got a 4k monitor with my 1440p monitors. This was before I even got a 1080 Ti so at times it was worse.

One of the Firefox updates back in October caused an even worse problem where YouTube videos on my 4k at full screen while my main display was a 1440p 144Hz, would cause the video to lag and actually lock up. I tried everything and couldn't get it to work. The next update fixed it but fixed as in it went back to how it was before. However, now, it's no problem.

I don't know the exact fix, but these are what I did.

In Nvidia Control Panel > Configure Surround, PhysX, I made it so the processor is using my GPU only.

Still in Nvidia Control Panel > Set up multiple displays and double checked that both monitors were running as their advertised refresh rate. Also confirmed that I was using the 1440p as my main display

Obviously updated GPU drivers.

Turned off WallPaper Engine because it seemed to be causing issues, instead through on DisplayFusion.

Unplugged 4k monitor from GPU, changed out cable just in case, booted up PC, signed in, plugged it back in, then reset my PC.

Make sure I have nothing graphically demanding playing on both monitors, IE, a stress test benchmark on one monitor while gaming (wild scenario I know lol)

After a while, it just stopped giving me a problem and since then I have not had the stutter or lag. When I was looking for my own fix, I remember reading from multiple people that it could be the CPU having issues processing different refresh rates but that didn't seem too correct. I could agree maybe on a budget CPU, but using an i7-5820k and with you having a 6700k, I can't see it being the problem. For all I know, it could have been the cable since that was the last thing I did for the monitor.

Thanks for the reply! Tried basically everything you said but still the same problem :/
For example when i play league on my main screen and i have twitch minimized on the second one, everything is fine. But then when i open twitch, its like the refresh rate of the main monitor goes down and it feels laggy/stutter.
Even tried to use igpu for the second monitor and still same problem.

This might be your typical generic attempt, but have you tried using different browsers for Twitch? Twitch in general also can be a wild card. I've had Twitch lock my PC up in the past when watching a steam in game on Steam -- which, could just be Steam's overlay lol

A few other tries would be to make sure both refresh rates are being run at their advertised setting in Windows Settings. Settings (gear icon) > System > Advanced Display Settings > Display Adapter Properties > Monitor and make sure the refresh rate is what it should be. Check both monitors when doing this. I know in Nvidia Control Panel, there is the option for this, but when I first got my 144hz, it did not change anything in my Windows Settings. Also, if your monitor has any type of OSD for it's refresh rate, turn it on and try to play League, while having Twitch open. If you see your monitor's refresh rate dropping below 144Hz and presumably into the 60's, then that's a whole different issue that needs to be tackled.

If your 1440p is a monitor that can overclock such as the Acer XB271HU, try pushing it to 165Hz and see if that does anything; alternatively you could try running it at 120Hz and seeing if that helps at all. You mention your other monitor is a little older, so it simply could just be the video output on it, with using the DP on the 1080 Ti. I might have explained that bad, but I remember with the 10 series when they came out, people were having issues running 2 or 3 monitors all on DisplayPort because apparently they did/do share or act as one DisplayPort hub. I personally have never had that issue, but say your 1440p is on DP and your older monitor is on DVI, possible some issue going on with that? Definitely something that has to be researched because I know I explained it piss poorly without having the exact topics in my history.

This probably won't help at all, but in you Nvidia Control panel, turn G-sync on for Fullscreen only. When I had Fullscreen and Windowed mode, for some god awful reason that thing killed my refresh rate. Using the OSD on the monitor, with G-sync on Fullscreen and Windowed, my refresh rate somehow tanked down from 144Hz to 70-90, which had terrible input lag in games even when gaming in Fullscreen. Turned off G-sync for Windowed and kept it for Fullscreen only and not a single problem with my refresh rate dipping.

My only best bet at this point would be to try a different cable for your older monitor. If it supports HDMI, try that. If it's using HDMI but also supports DVI, try that. If your 1440p 144Hz is running HDMI, try switching over to DisplayPort. I don't remember too much about HDMI, the only time I used HDMI was on Xbox because on PC, I went straight from DVI to DisplayPort. DisplayPort comes with certified amounts of bandwidth it can run, this is why people say to use at least Display Port 1.2 for 4k 60 Hz. If you're using an older HDMI cable, chances could be the 1440p 144Hz is taking too much on it and it's tanking. I don't see how that would affect your other monitor but it is something to keep in mind. I've used DIsplayPort 1.2 for my 4k monitors and for 1440p 144Hz or higher, I've used DisplayPort 1.3. 1.3 is a little pricey, but I would rather be safe than sorry having an issue.

Links below are the cables I use.

This would also be worth checking out, because this user also seems to had the issue you have and they seemed to fix it.

Well first of all i would clarify that its not only twitch, just for any application that has some moving graphics in it. I basically cant anything much open on my second screen.

I cant find anything on showing the refresh rate in realtime atleast for my monitor. Dell S2417DG btw.

About the cable thing i use DP for my 1440p, the cable i got with the monitor i think. For the second i use HDMI since it only has HDMI and VGA. So i cant change much axcept for maybe trying a different DP cable.

I also tried that G-Sync setting before didn't change much for me. But best scenerio is that it is fixed even with windowed because that's pretty nice to just ALT + TAB of out games.

I will try that fix for twitch but that would be only for twitch sadly.

Also wanted to note something else weird. When i play League windowed on my 1440p screen (I still play league on 1080p anyway cause im used to it) and someone sends me a message on Steam the same problem occurs. Even is steam is on 1440p monitor and then when i check the message its fine again.

Appreciate the help though ;)
