does it sound like a hardware or software problem?

Hardware.
Sounds to me like the bearing in the fan are messed up. Its probably going to lead to them completely going out, making the fan not spin. I suggest you have it replaced before it dies so you don't overheat your pc.

Is what I would have said too. Sounds like a dodgy bearing. You could probably ask your laptop's manufacture for a replacement if it's in warranty. Or like a spear fan?

Either way, I would stop using it if you have a spinning Hard drive in there. These vibrations would probably be enough to mess with the head which in turn, could cause damage to the hard drive and your data.

Also also, wouldn't want to play games on a dodgy fan. If you are, keep an eye on your temps.

I broke the warranty by opening up the case, would it be possible to just order a fan and install it my self?

Yea, just look up the model number of the computer and add fan to the end of it on google, then it should show up. I suggest you watch a teardown guide first before buying to see if you feel confident with the replacement.
