I'm having a problem getting CoD 4 to boot on PC. I've done lots of Google searches and oddly enough the only topic that comes back is a TTG post where someone had an issue like mine but not directly from 1st boot.
Archives/t=5886640/cod4-pc-black-...oblem.html

Here is what happens:

Clean install from Steam
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

CoD4 will show its splash logo and go to fullscreen black like it's about to load and then kick me back to the splash screen and shoot back to full-screen black this keeps happening in a loop. the annoying part of this is that it makes it near on impossible to close the game so I have to sign out of windows every time just to get my PC out of the loop.

This is the 1st time I've attempted to run CoD4 on my new PC
My Build can be found [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

What I've attempted
Fresh installing again
Fresh installing to another HDD
Loading the exe outside of steam
Disabling all sound devices
Copying someone else's Cod4 profile
Forcing Cod4 to load full screen via +r_fullscreen "0"

Thanks to Adam for helping me with some of the above.

It's worth noting that at fresh install and without having the game load the CoD4 folder in appdata is empty and adding a profile there does not seem to help.

When CoD4 claims it never shut down correctly and if I would like to use safe mode the same looping result happens

At this point I'm unsure if there is anything I can do everything driver wise is up to date and every other game I would play works just fine on my new PC.

Looks to me like a GPU/Driver issue, but you say CoD4 is the only thing it happens with. So rather is pointing to a game issue. Now, when you fresh install CoD4 it sets graphics settings for you and something older cod4 hate, is Anti Aliasing.

In your config_mp.cfg file (Found in C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Local\CallofDuty4MW\players\profiles\<profile name>, make sure the values are set to the following:

seta r_aaAlpha "dither (fast)"
seta r_aaSamples "1"
seta r_displayRefresh "60 Hz"
seta r_fullscreen "0"
seta r_aspectRatio "auto"
seta r_mode "800x600"
seta r_monitor "1"
seta r_multiGpu "0"

Those settings should cause no issues at all when loading up and launch in a small window so it has no tabbing or minimising to do. Now I'm not sure what your resolution you're running at, but when i first got 4K a few years back. I know it broke this game badly.

Also, do you know what version of CoDx you have? Adam told me he gave you his files for it, but maybe better just to do a fresh install of them: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

I'll keep looking though.

EDIT: Also make sure VSync is turned off. This game hates it

There is no CallofDuty4MW in appdata I don't think the game even gets that far to create that.

Edit:

Adam told me about CoDx but this is without any mods whatsoever totally clean install premodded I've not even setup PB yet.

^^ I just found that out xD

Which is odd. Since the CFG ID's your whole system and changes it accordingly..

But you should have the exact same file in your; \steamapps\common\Call of Duty 4\players\profiles\<profile name>

Copy those settings above into that file.

If you don't have that extract this into the profiles folder

I would also say this -

Update // reinstall Audio and GPU drivers

Turn off any overlays like Discord / overwolf ect

I'll let you know if I come up with any more ideas.

This is my common folder for CoD4 there is no /players

I added \players\profiles\ and added the data you gave me to the folder and bam we have life!

I deleted the profiles in-game and created a new one and the game went back into its loop at start up. So I added those profiles back and it works fine for MP mode I just renamed myself on that profile.

Single player does not work it will just loops in out of the logo like above but I really don't care if single player works since I won't be using it.

Just trying to get the MP screen to be fullscreen and I should be good as long as I use these profiles.

Edit:

Fixed fullscreen but editing the profile config dvar seta r_fullscreen

My feeling is the reason SP is not working is that %appdata% does not have any profiles for CoD4 and maybe it's the same thing. nevertheless, MP loads just sorting out PB now.

What res do you run? Personally havent run Cod4 in fullscreen. Ever.

Play it in windowed and use Borderless Gaming to make it fullscreen. It will save you a lot of hassle doing it that way...

Glad it has a pulse now though..

It's fine I was able to tweak the settings and res for the 'ttg' profile you gave me all is working well it seems I will just have to remember to keep a copy of your profile all the time since I'm unable to create new profiles in the game otherwise it will boot loop again.
